I just picked up a B5200 2 days ago with a loader. I bought separately a 4' bush hog for the 3 pt hitch. Hooked it up today, drove around the yard once, stopped, put it in reverse, and now everytime I let out the clutch it stalls no matter what gear or even in neutral. I unhooked the bush hog and have the same result. Used it all day the day before with no issues ( before I installed the brush hog). This my first tractor so Im a novice. Anyone know whats going on?

ok! ill check that in the morning. thanks! I was very worried that I messed up the transmission or something with the brush hog... but it seems like it should be able to handle it.

Did you verify the length of the PTO shaft is good for the tractor/mower combination?

If not you may have damaged the tractor and the drive system. Look at the rear of the tractor aro the PTO output shaft for any obvious damage (cracked case, bent/broken shaft,…).

I have no idea if you damaged the tractor or not but it is certainly a possibility since your PTO shaft may be too long or too short. If too long then yes it could damage the tractor. If too short it could just come apart in use and do a lot of damage.

Just look for damage. Then if you can attach the mower to the tractor WITHOUT the PTO shaft attached to the tractor. Put the mower down on the ground and see if the PTO shaft has to be pulled apart to reach the tractor output shaft. It should have to stretch a few inches at minimum. Then you will know you probably have NOT damaged the tractor. If the PTO shaft is too long to fit on then you probably DID damage the tractor.

After you get the tractor moving again, search the internet for how to verify the length of the PTO shaft and verify it is fine or not fine.

I would imagine it is fine and it is a safety switch that is giving you problems. I don’t know much about the B5200 but there may be an operator presence switch, a PTO switch or a HST safety switch that is gone bad. Do you have a wiring diagram? There is one in the operation manual probably.

Use this link to find a Work Shop Manual (WSM) that can provide you the wiring diagram and instructions for troubleshooting the problem.

Do you have the brakes locked?

Throw the lever to disengage the PTO on and off a few times, it might be stuck between modes.

Since there are no safety switches then that means there is something that is overloading the engine when you let out the clutch.

Make sure the PTO is not engaged (as NIW stated).

Since it stalls when in Neutral that is not normal. Can you move the tractor by pushing it or is it “locked up” and can’t be pushed manually? Grab a rear tire and see if you can move the tractor a few inches.

It may be that when you were shifting it the transmission got jammed in two gears at one time. The clutch may have come apart and is stalling the engine when it tries to engage.

Good deal!

I assume you will clean or replace that switch so it is less likely to give you problems in the future.

Odd that you even have a seat switch but perhaps Kubota added it to the later model years or a safety minded person added it on.

Would you please post a picture of the seat area showing how the switch is installed? I am just curious what it looks like. I don’t see anything in the parts listing around the seat that shows any safety switch.

I think it was the seat switch! Opened and closed the seat, started it and it went right into gear no issue... used it all day with no problem! thanks for the help!
There is no (OEM) seat switch on a B5200!
No clue what you did to make it magically work.

They also do not have an electrical shut-off solenoid, just a pull cable.

Did you by any chance kick the left rear tire? It works more often than one thinks!! ;)
