BH65 hoe with factory 16" bucket and mechanical thumb. The thumb is very hard to move must hook a chain to bucket and wrap around the thumb to open. Must close by curling the bucket into the thumb. Want to be able to move the thumb with my own arms. Nothing appears bent. soaked in pb blaster. Thinking I may have to pound out the pins and polish them. Is there a better way than sledgehammering them till they come out? I dont have any welding tanks for heating. Would that new MAP Gas work. thanks for any ideas.

Mine move so freely that it will slip out. Maybe yours is different than mine, I am not sure about the pins, if they are not out how are you able to get the thumb to move in and out. You have a picture?

i am using the wrong terms. I now see that the pins are the ones that hold the thumb in position. They come out easy and have retaining clips on the end. The Pins I am referring to are the ones at the end of the thumb that the thumb rotates on they have grease fittings. After I remove the pins I move the thumb with the bucket and a chain to relocate it in another hole then reinsert the pin. I want to just remove the pin and move the thumb by hand but it will not budge. Thanks for the reply.

FWIW... when I hear the solution to a problem maybe requires "sledgehammering" or "pound" and wrapping a chain and using the hydraulics to move I fear it will make the problem worse not better.

beware mushrooming out the ends of the pins with the sledge as this often makes the pin useless at worst or at best in need of reshaping the ends that were pounded on. They can be to soft to handle the forces of the sledging. Similar fears with pulling with hydraulics as you may find the direction of final movement may not be the desired long term direction.

I am sure you are taking care. Just some thoughts for what its worth.

photo might help. I have the same setup and can't picture what you describe. But I second the fears of over-pounding pins or pulling with hydraulics. Don't make the problem worse before you get a chance to make it better.

Thanks for all your concern. I agree and know the limits. RPM at idle slowly add pressure and listen for the engine to load then stop.
I open and closed the thumb about 20 times today with the hydraulics applying pb blaster. it operates so smooth but without the hydraulics I can only open it with a long prybar and close it by hammering down the thumb.
