BX 23S PTO damage

Hi all, just wondered if anyone knew what damage would be caused if when the PTO is running, the PTO brake fails on please? We have had extensive (£6000+) damage done and since they rebuilt the transmission have found the PTO brake not disengaging , so have had the transmission removed again to replace the brake (another £1000)!
could the failing of the brake of caused the damage? Rear transmission cover split with associated damage to transmission case , shafts and bearings etc.

hmm... what was the PTO powering ? I've never run the PTO on my BX23S in 7+ years, would have to look at what's inside to see how the brake works. Others will know but I'm wondering how it slows down very heavy loads ( like a wood chipper or bush hog )

Thanks for the reply. It was running a Trimax 150 mower attachment. I guy using it said it was lowered and on the ground and the PTO had been running for about 30 seconds before an almighty bang and the rear transmission cover disitigrated and spat oil ou so was just wondering if the brake failed would it instantly stop the shaft intern over stressing the out put shaft going through the transmission cover

I’ll be interesting in hearing the replies to the question because I wasn’t aware there was a brake that serves to restrict or stop movement of the PTO shaft. Never thought much about it.

However, I do know that it’s possible to move the levers when the engine is turned off so that the mid PTO shaft is either locked in position or free to rotate by hand. It’s easier to connect the MMM when the PTO shaft rotates freely…

To the OP, what’s the chances that whoever repaired your tractor didn’t put it back together properly, and that the current problem is the result of that?

I wouldn't think the brake plate is the problem. If it was locked it wouldn't have allowed the PTO shaft to rotate in the first place.

Was it the first time the Trimax 150 mower attachment was ever used on that particular tractor? If so was the PTO shaft sized correctly? I'm thinking the shaft locked up and destroyed the housing.

I'm with you. Likely the PTO shaft was too long and bottomed out when the mower was set down. I wouldn't think that brake would have enough stopping power to hurt itself.

Thanks for that Bee-Positive. I was trying to remember what I did to get the PTO to turn freely, and I must put the lever between positions to get that to happen.

Perhaps this drawing will be helpful to the OP as well.

Very very unlikely the PTO brake caused an issue, they just don't fail like that.

Sounds like the mower deck was lowered to the ground to cutting position, when the issue became apparent. And that the PTO was likely engaged either slightly before lowering or after the mower was on the ground.

But my gut tells me the PTO shaft probably extended when the deck was lowered. If this is the case with the BX23S, perhaps the PTO shaft is indeed too long, as mentioned several times above, and damaged the rear case (during transport perhaps?) and internal parts BEFORE the PTO was engaged?

Yeah, 3pt up shortens shaft (or tries too!), down lengthens it...
