An example of one of the advantages of Kubota paint. If you’re looking for a used one, you can tell from 100’ away whether it’s been stored inside or outside. That one looks like it hasn’t seen the inside of a building since it left the factory.

Looks like straw, if that is sold as hay there ain't much nutrition in it.
Agreed. Pretty crappy stuff. It looks like it got rained on.

I'm picking some new stuff up tomorrow for the neighbor. Hopefully it's better than this.

Dirtydeed, not to be negative but that hay should have more leafs in it, but it may just be dry from last years cutting. When you open the bale if the horses won't eat it you'll have plenty of bedding.

Around here we have had a lot of moisture for two years so hay prices are lower then normal. I see 1300-1500# round bales for $60-$75.

What's interesting is cattle will eat grass horses won't. Maybe it's because the horse people spoil their animals with "special" feeds. I can put out three year old hay out for bedding, or dump it in a low spot to stop erosion and cattle will consume the whole thing!

Oh. I agree with you 100%. I didn't source or supply it and they aren't my horses. I'm only paid to move it from point A to point B. ;)

I stopped the local farmer next door 2 weeks ago while he was cutting hay on the next lot to see if he would sell any of it to my other neighbor (with the horses). I only did that to help my neighbor find another local alternative to this stuff that she'd been getting. They bring this stuff here from about 2 hours away. It looks bad and the transportation cost must be significant. The horses have been (reluctantly) eating it.

Hopefully the stuff that I pick up for her tomorrow is of better quality. Cost is $75/ 3x3x6 bale. Not sure if that's good, bad or other. Either way, I'm not the one paying for it.

I do know what good hay looks like. Worked for a farm many years ago...we had mostly alfalfa hay and just a bit of timothy.

The old L2800 has been busy the past few weeks—finally got her out to my 65 acres, mowed the trail to the cabin, clearing around the cabin (moved the leftover logging remnants with the bucket), and mowed all of my trails and firebreaks.

Amazing how much new growth comes up after dozing trails and firebreaks. Made a little firebreak with the bucket yesterday around the 1 acre clearing after mowing so could burn the adjacent 3 acre patch of cedar tops, left the bb at home.

Plan on burning more brush piles/tops tomorrow before we get into burn ban, then will push leftovers into more piles to finish off burning that 3 acre clearing.

All together about 20 hours meter time in 2 weeks and mostly bush hogging. Amazing what working a tractor hard will do for the engine, those little diesels just love to be max throttle for extended periods.

I know that cattle have four stomachs. I think horses have less maybe 1.5?

So horses can’t digest the same things as a cow can, or at least they can’t get any nutrition out of poor quality food.

added on edit: I reviewed the anatomy of a cow and officially they have ONE stomach with four different compartments in one stomach that digest the food better than a horse stomach does. A horse also has ONE stomach but it is somewhat divided into two parts.

Let the grass get mostly dry this morning then took the chubby girl for a romantic mow. We had a big time:

1. The chemical application to the future pollinator habitat looks good.
2. Hyd top link is really working out well. Here is my apron off the road into a pasture and to go in/out the bucket / grapple has be lifted up higher than front tire…now I can just use the lever and lift the mower deck…works really well for me in multiple places. I am glad I it.
3. Did a little grapplin’ in the woods.
4. We had a snack in the orchard. This is second year getting fruit and they are still pretty small, but they tasted really good.

Back from our trip and time to do the annual grade on the drive. 3 hrs later and done. Why do I always pick the days where there is no wind and I wear the dust?

Picked up a half dozen new "test" bales for the horses. We'll see if they like it any better than what they've been getting.

Just curiosity, what do those large square bales weigh? I think they're pretty much a standard size?

See them around here, but not as much as round bales for the dairy/beef cow guys.

They were LONG after my farmer days as a kid....

That doesn't sound fun at all. No eta on your ride?

I left about a 1/2 acre to do with our 54" cub cadet. It was breezy and my ears, eyes and nose are full of dirt. The cab rocks 😆

How do you have your ammo can mounted? I have the same tractor and looking to do similar.
Oh, I just used the mount that came on the tractor with the small plastic Kubota tool box. Mine was mounted that way from the dealer since I have a backhoe for the tractor. When the plastic lid broke I replaced it with a steel 30 cal ammo box

Edit: I did some digging and found the part numbers for ya....

Here's a shot of the plastic Kubota tool box if it helps.

These are 3x3x6. Supposedly in the 750-800 # range.

3x4x6 are supposed to be a half ton
