I have a M4D 071 with the LA1154 loader. Was working well and then the curl down just quit working. I have removed and reconnected quick attach hydraulic hoses. No leaks, no noticable damage to any of the system. Any suggestions on trouble shooting this?

N.Y,
Have you torqued the loader mounting bracket bolts? Sometimes they will loosen the first couple hours and need to be re-torqued.

[I have not tried that, but I will. The unit has 870 hours on it.

I'd be inclined to swap hydraulic lines so that left to right on the joystick raises or lowers the boom, and fore and aft curls the bucket. The results might give you a better idea of what's going on.

Once I complete swapping the lines this weekend, what am I looking for with results that will help me? If I have the same symptoms with raising or lowering the boom, what does that point me to? I removed the bucket curl arms last night to see if there was something binding and both arms operated the same, travel about 4 inches slowing and return quickly.

Remove the couplers from the bucket circuit.

The theory of the problem is that fluid is not flowing properly through the hoses. By moving the hoses that will show if the problem is in the hoses, problem would now be in the lift movement.

Now I see that @TheOldHokie has recommended that you remove the couplers that are in the bucket circuit instead of swapping the hoses. The thought there seems to be that the couplers are causing the flow issue and that removing them will correct the problem by restoring the proper flow path. If the FEL works properly without the couplers, then you could install one coupler to isolate which is bad or just replace all four coupler halves with new or repair the ones you have (If possible).

That makes sense. I will update this after I can work on it this weekend. Thanks for all the comments, very helpful.

Not exactly The thought is to establish whether or not one or more couplers is causing the problem. Removing all of them gets us there faster and easier than selective tests

All the responses were appreciated.
Found the problem, slightly bend piston rods. Got it working again without apparent damage to the rods. Zip tied a board under the bend section and slowly lowered the lift, as it put pressure on the rods it removed the bend. If the seals don’t start leaking, I will be really happy.
