Centrifugal force holds them steady. Once you give the part a little tap against them before final tightening they don't move again. If you're worried, you could screw on a centering pilot that slips into the center hole. For bigger stuff just flip the jaws to the stepped side.

These are cuts from my Hypertherm 45. Just under 3/8 steel that is near the high limit on duty cycle when cutting a sheet full. Will do 1/2 but not as straight and clean a cut. Great hobby machine that id easy to switch from hand torch to machine torch.

I have had good luck with Kenda brand trailer tires. They seem to have good uv resistance. I think improper pressure is the biggest cause of any tire failure followed by road debris.
