Update Came away very easily to reveal the problem. Just one bit of advice, take the governor off first as there are 2 small springs in there that need to be unhooked before removing the front.

Exactly my problem although I did end up replacing the whole head gasket before I found out that wasn't the case although mine came off a lot easier than yours seemed to. I will follow with interest

There is absolutely no sign of that! externally or what little I could see internally. Could it be anything else?

I have a kubota l1500 that developed a mixing of water and oil problem so I naturally assumed it was the head gasket and set about a complete head gasket renewal, all went well so I replaced the oil filter, filled it with oil, lovely. Thanks, Daren. I am in France and they are unhelpful at the best of times. I have acquired an L175 parts list and have placed my first order with the local farmers' supplies using just the parts number, they said, yep NP, Be here next week. Let's hope they are the right bits.
