I can't thank you all enough for your help. The potential hole was just debris like expected, however, there is a small crack. Here are some closer pics of the crack after cleaning.

As soon as I walked away I realized I forgot to mention the thermostat. In my final testing, I completely removed it to make sure it wasn't stuck completely closed.
