Two days ago my JD Z-turn gave up the ghost on its drive motor idler pulley, pushed it into the garage with the MF ... Yesterday I had time to look at it, and figured out it was gonna be a bit to get it going again ... Nice to have options!

Looks like I need a new casting ... The belt looks good, just need a couple of parts, the bearing was starting to make noise on Saturday, I sprayed some lube on it, and got 45 minutes of cutting with it, can't hear it with ear plugs in, or blades engaged, looks like it has been "complaining" for a while though!

So ... I put the new spacers and bushing on the FDR finish mower and adjusted it down to 4" and greased it ... Normally cut the grass by the house at 3.25" ...

Since I had buzzed the lawn around the house back last Saturday, I wanted to hit it again before I left out yesterday afternoon ... So I only cut off about an inch or so, wasn't any rain or much growth this last week, couldn't get in and under some areas, but got the majority done ...
Every time you post about your Massey as “MF” my brain hears it like Samuel Jackson in literally any movie he’s in.

Can’t remember if I posted this here. Picked up @hagrid ‘s favorite tractor! BX1850 not running with deck for a good price. PO said his son overheated it mowing. After talking with the Wolfman, I tore into it. Was exactly as he said, freeze plug behind timing cover. Been working today on reassembling.

Gotta order the 3 o rings for timing cover and the o ring for the head pin, missed them in my original order. Everything else should go smoothly!

Kubota part # L2280. I purchased online from Coleman Equipment. $105 shipped to my door. Less expensive than Messicks, cheaper shipping too. They bolt directly to the original seat. The factory seat has dimples where they go.
SWEET .... thanks for the information. I didn't know they were available. My seat is going to accommodate a pair too.

First mow of the season.
I'm getting the MX set up today to do some flail mowing. I got the QH off, the flail on, the snow blower on a pallet and put away, and am going to drill out the four flow restrictors that I bought from @Kennyd4110 last year for two of the remote pairs on the Summit Hydraulics multiplier.

I also adjusted one of the FD levers/cables in the cab of the M6060 that wouldn't lock in position. Those bloody sleeved cables always give me fits as to which way the nuts need to go to get the desired effect. 😂

Actually washed tractor today—first time had a bath in 2 years. Wife broke out the pressure washer and washed the Jeep, so wth it’s an amazing day, washed 2 years of deer blood off the 4 wheeler and sap/grease off the Kubota. At least now I will know if any seals leaking…

i find the FDR2584 is leaving wind rows. It was so dry last year I only mowed a couple of times with the L5460 and it wasn't an issue. I'm thinking it's the higher moisture content spring grass and the bigger rear tires are flattening the grass on the outside and the edge of the mower and the blades don't have enough lift to pull the grass back up to cut properly.

I also find the extra width of the tractor is also causing me to miss some grass if there is any steering deviation. I have been watching for a bigger mower. Not sure if a FDR3690 is worth the extra 6" of width or to look for a 12' AFM mower. Neither seem to pop up near me used.

I'm finding the same thing with my FDR3690 ... Last fall when I got it, not a problem ... I'm thinking it's the higher moisture content grass doesn't fly as well ... ? Besides being thicker and taller in my situation at least ...

Was taking about 12" off the top ... So really not "finish cutting" but I cut when I have time ...

Our yard usually gets mowed frequently enough that there's only a small amount of clippings to deal with. When the growth does outpace the mowing I end up chasing brown clippings around for the next several mowings. The grass does change consistency with the weather and Spring is when it it fast-growing and juicy. Almost weekly the speed of the PTO and the tractor vary a little for the best results. The longer the grass, the more difficult it gets. In Spring I almost never mow till the morning dew burns off. During Summer the grass is a bit more wiry and I've been able to continue mowing during passing showers.

Being half awake when looking at McMXi's purty picture I misread one word that gave me a jolt. I read the word "flail" as "fall" and for an instant thought I slept through a few months. Maybe the snow blower and no snow on the distant peaks helped throw me off:)

In some areas the grass was heavier and obviously looks worse. I'll raise the deck another inch next time I mow and see how it looks after.

Good rule of thumb, at least in turf grass is to only remove 1/3 of the blade of grass.

Used the high priced wheelbarrow today. I moved a couple of rototillers out of the barn to make room for a new old rototiller. The Cub Cadet runs OK, but has crazy engine vibration. The gas tank fell off and was relocated. The Honda needs some carb work.
The new old one is a 1979 Troy Built Horse.
I have a ‘76 model that my mom bought after I graduated high school and left home. It’s the model that was designed to allow other attachments such as a generator, but I think TroyBilt elected to not get into the attachment biz. I’m thinking it probably had something to do with the changing culture of our litigious society and the obvious increase in liability for dangerous rotating things being exposed. Probably the end of the days when manufacturers assumed most people were familiar with Darwinian Theory and didn’t need to hold cell phones while they were working.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that it has twice as many grease seals and a two piece PTO shaft. I want to completely overhaul and restore it because of the sentimental value. The problem is the old Tecumseh cast iron engine is too old for parts availability unless I have them made. I wont take it apart until I get a reliable source for parts, so I put a new Predator 6HP on it. Fit perfectly except for the throttle control. The whole bottom needs to be disassembled, cleaned, repaired and repainted. I think the original decals are still available from TroyBilt. Say what you will, but I figure 50 years support is good support. I still have the original owners manual and repair manual.
