Hi everyone. First post here. Still learning about my tractor. I have a '98 Kubota L3010 that I inherited with a home that I bought. House has 11 acres with a 1/4 mile gravel driveway. I do various things with my tractor, most of which do not even use 25% of the tractor's potential. It is used a lot for driveway maintenance with box scrape, and snow removal. I move dirt around occasionally for dirt bike jumps for the kids, but thats pretty much it. Cutting wood and hauling here and there.

I am continuing to learn maintenance and have kept up a lot with it. I feel as though this tractor is overkill for what I use it for. I am believing that I can still get over $10,000 for it right now with its 1,300 hours and attachments. Thinking to move to a cheaper unit just to use the box scrape etc. Am I crazy?

I have a backhoe, box scrape, wood splitter, post hole digger, and york rake as attachments.

If I sold and replaced, I'd consider a gas tractor with 3point, or an older Deere 750, or biting the bullet on a new kubota bx series.

The tractor and loader is worth $10,000. Add in all the attachments, and ask $15,000 and take $14,000. You will spend almost that much for less. You know the condition of this tractor, and it cost you nothing. With 11 acres, I'd keep it and thank my lucky stars.

I think you should price the replacement before you sell that one. I'm pretty sure you can't buy a new BX for $10 grand. The last gas tractors would probably be at least 30 years old. Having grown up on gas tractors, I can tell you there are good reasons diesels took over.

Is this place a relatively recent thing? I think you should use it a year or two and see if you still feel the same way

OK, check out the market for what you can buy for $10K. You won't be happy with a BX, huge downgrade to what you have. I've owned my BX23S and yes it works for me but I'm not in a hurry. I do work for my neighbours as I have ZERO need for it on my 1/3ac lot. The B2601 series would be 'ok', bet tractor/loader is close to 25K today ? Easy to check if south of the 49th as the Kubota USA has 'build my ride' website. Used will be 80% of MSRP ?
Maybe sell off the attachments YOU don't use. You may get 50% of new but prices vary by region !
You can maintain a gravel driveway with a riding mower and drag an ibeam with chainlink fence behind. BTDT for 15 years when I had the other property. The 'trick' is to do it every 2-3 weeks.

Why would you sell it? It works great and seems appropriately sized for your land. You can’t really buy anything reliable for the price you could sell it for. And gas tractors are pretty much vintage antiques. A new BX would cost twice what you can sell yours for and have half the capability of your current tractor.

Think of it this way…
The previous owner of the property wanted a tractor appropriately sized for the property and what he wanted to do to maintain the property. He bought it and implements that he used to maintain or improve the property that you now own. I doubt the previous owner would get an extravagantly oversized tractor or it would be obvious and probably have a cab. It looks right sized to slightly small for the 11 acres.

I think you should keep it and figure out what you need to do with it to maintain your property. I think you would regret getting a smaller tractor or having no tractor at all.

You could sell off any implements that you can’t figure out a need for but sometimes the need is infrequent for some implements.

You wouldn't be happy with a BX, it would be too small for what you describe. You'd also have to replace all the implements - they're too big for a BX. So it's not just the BX you have to buy, you also have to buy at least a box blade or land plane.

I don't think you could get something sensible for $11K. So why would you do it? You won't free up any cash, and you'll end up with a worse machine than what you have.

Pull the BH off of it and it was be a much less bulky and unruly.

If you don't need to do loader work, pull the loader off.

Most likely, yes.🤔

Not my money or anything, but if you sell it, i suspect it shall forever be remembered as ‘the one the got away.’

but you should have no trouble selling it for the amount you mentioned. I think you would have a very difficult time replacing t with anything of similar size, capability and condition for that price though. (I don’t think you will be able to replace it with a smaller machine for that price either, certainly not with the implements you have. ).

I also think if you replace with a smaller machine you will quickly realize that a smaller machine runs out of traction before they run out of power.

I have no idea the purchase agreement for your place but the way I interpreted…assuming that the tractor was included in sale price of house / mortgage, you still would pay that mortgage whether you have the tractor or not correct? So if you replace it, for something that probably would cost more, you gave away a free tractor that is very capable. (And now you can buy something else)

Very Nice barn by the way.👍
(If don’t have forks for the machine, those could come in handy for you if you plan to fill the barn up)

I would agree with the majority.

Keep it.

Although I don’t keep up with tractors prices, there is no way I would sell it, and try to replace it. I think you would lose a lot of money, for no real reason at all, AND have a “less capable” tractor to boot.

As far as the implements go, I have a general rule………..Never sell tools…(or guns ;) )

EDIT: You also have a “pre-emissions” tractor, which is a “+’ in my book. Less stuff to go wrong and easier to work on, or troubleshoot. (y)

Owned the same tractor for 5 years, very capable, dependable and plenty of power for what you need. Wish I still had it.

I will summarize what all posts above alluded to: No one ever said “I wish I had a smaller tractor for this task” but everyone who has ever used a tractor has at one point thought the opposite.

I'm another one that says keep it. I don't think it's overkill especially if you use it for snow removal and driveway maintenance. A BX is absolutely tiny by comparison. The L isn't giant by any means. It looks like you have plenty of storage space available.

Buy a zero turn or lawn tractor if you really need one. I have 3 ways to mow. which I find to be about right. I have a rotary cutter for my L, a pull behind Swisher rough cut that I use with my Polaris Ranger, and a 42 riding lawn mower. That gives me options if the first choice needs some expected maintenance or has breakage.

Generally, I use my Swisher to mow along the gravel driveway. I use the lawn tractor to mow my 2 acre yard, and can use the rotary cutter or Swisher on the rest. or to mow trails.

I'd say yes, you'd be crazy. If it were me, I never wished I owned a backhoe so that would be sold off.
Check what used tractors are going for at a local used tractor dealer. My BIL and I both bought Grand L's from him. Good guy:

Sell an L3010 and buy a BX .... pure insanity! 😂

I had a BX25 for five years on my 20 acres and even considered keeping it when I bought the first MX6000HST. But after a couple of weeks with the MX I realized that I simply had no use for the BX. I sold the BX to the manager of the local Kubota dealer for his personal use. He has an L6060 too but really likes the BX at his cabin on the lake.

The manager of the local dealer who bought my BX will send me photos of the little tractor from time to time. He and his wife are having a new house built and he sent me this photo last summer of the BX in action.

I certainly would not sell that set up.

Trying to trade it would be an even bigger mistake.

Depends on what you mean by 'overkill'. IF you mean it's physically too large for you to be comfortable using it, then maybe. Or maybe you'll become accustomed to it. I'd certainly not rush to downsize to a BX!

So, define what you mean by 'overkill'.

If you choose to sell it post it here on the forum on the "But Sell Trade" forum. There will be someone here happy to accept your good deal.
