Starting threads properly

Posting here to see if I'm starting threads or posting correctly for this forum. I realize the title of the forum has tractor in it, and that is probably the primary topic of this forum. But I've posted numerous questions about a newly acquired RTV400ci UTV that I'm doing repair work on, and have only gotten a response from one member, the moderator. Is this an unpopular model and few or nobody else have them, or do they never break down (unlilkely), or am I asking stupid (I don't think they are) questions? Looks like my posts have numerous views but as I say, no responses. If I'm doing something wrong, let me know.

Welcome aboard! There's no problem with how you ask questions. The titles do make a difference, and yours mention the issue up front. I often skip threads that have a title like Need Help or Piston Rings without mentioning what with / what for.

People here are more courteous and helpful than those on some other boards. I'm sure that anyone who can assist well do so when the see the threads. My guess is that there just aren't many people here with that model UTV (or not many who have worked on them).

I doubt I have ever started a thread here, always been able to find the answer or suggestion I was looking for.

Now I have four pieces of Kubota equipment, three of which are old, to service and maintain.
I may have to start posting some.

I see one other thread that you have started that discusses the problem on your UTV.


The person trying to help you is a skilled person with access to many resources. Therefore, most other members will just stay out of the way unless they have specific knowledge about your situation.

He has asked twice for the serial number of the VEHICLE not the engine. With that vehicle serial number he will be able to identify which specific engine you have. The serial number of the engine is NOT that helpful since Kubota doesn’t track that serial number in their manuals or parts list.

I suggest that you provide the serial number for the UTV and you may even want to place the name like with the “at” symbol in front like this @quawk
That sends an alert that they have been mentioned and a link to the thread.
Since that person (NIW) is a moderator and it is spring in Idaho he may be very busy and not able to read everything that is posted so that alert will help him see you provided the information he required.

You should see a bell in the upper right corner and a red circle with a number that is the alert from above.

I know nothing about your problem so would not comment on that but do recall seeing a Subaru engine being discussed for poor performance

I'll agree with what Chim said - we all see the posts.

Unfortunately - this is a "tractor forum" - while Kubota makes everything from hay bailers and UTV's, they rarely come into the mix.

And since it is somewhat a rare bird - many will not have a comment.

Looking at the same Messicks sight you are looking at - is this it by chance?

I will post the serial number of the unit (side x side) as you suggest. I do understand the alert notifications that shows up at the bell icon on forums such as this, and watch for them. Thanks for your help.

It is. And upon further research about this cam/ ACR automatic compression release, I've found that early cams did not have this feature, and later was superseded by a cam and different part number that did have these additional parts to provide the automatic compression release. As I mentioned in my previous post, I wondered if there simply weren't that many members on this forum that had this machine, and therefore not much, if any experience with them. I have figured out the engine problem and have it back together and starting and running properly, but now am on to a centrifugal clutch engagement/sticking problem. Grinds badly when trying to shift from neutral into forward or reverse. Seems like the one-way bearing is not allowing the centrifugal clutch output shaft to turn freely in the clockwise direction as it is supposed to. Have another thread started about this.

I don't know a ton about the RTV's, but I do know enough to be dangerous.

Will try to improve my posting technique and use paragraphs. I understand how this may be more readable. As I mentioned previously, I wondered if lack of responses was that few or nobody else even had one of these machines.

The serial number for the machine itself is 13160 and as previously posted is a 2012 Kubota RTV400ci. This may be a little after the fact now, as I have figured out both the engine and clutch problems, and it is now starting, running, and driving fine now. A couple of questions I've asked in prior posts is what does the ci in the model title of this machine stand for. And also, most other makes refer to this type of machine as UTV, utility vehicle. What does the RTV stand for, recreational vehicle, by chance?

I can't tell you what the ci stands for, I've never seen anything documented about the letters.
There was only 2 models in that version:

RTV400CI-A/H Orange model ATV/HDWS

RTV400CIR-A/H Realtree Hardwoods Camo model ATV/HDWS

Don't know I have never seen documentation on it.
Guess would be Auto / Hydro.

This was their first model and they changed a lot over the years.

I get the impression that you kind of like answers to your direct question.

Simple answer. Yes, you are correct. Very few owners of the RTVs hanging out here (mostly tractors), even fewer for that specific model. And, as others noted, once NIW weighs in, we'd usually wait to see where that goes - he knows more than the rest of us combined. But if he asks a question and it goes unanswered, then we figure the original poster has disappeared and lose interest in the thread (that's a sure thread killer, not answering a sensible question that someone has asked).

As for what RTV means, google gave me this link: https://www.wickhamtractor.com/blog-posts/what-does-rtv-stand-for-in-kubota/

They claim it means "rugged terrain vehicle." I guess that's as good a story as any, but it sounds pretty stupid to me. Perhaps it does mean that, and some marketing weenie thought it was a good idea. Perhaps that's a backronym, and actually someone in marketing just thought RTV sounded good, then had to make up a reason.
