tiny mod: seat switch defeat

I had a problem in that from the driver's seat I can't see the pallet fork tips and my aim isn't very good, so moving around pallets (on uneven ground, which is all I have) was really frustrating.

I installed this little momentary switch to defeat the "operator's butt is in the seat" circuit. I messed around for a while with the idea of using matching connectors to make it removable by just unplugging it, but eventually decided that was trying too hard for elegance and just spliced the wires into the seat side of the OEM connector.

Now I can stand up off the seat, press the button with my finger, and move the tractor fore and aft while I'm manipulating the loader to get the forks aimed just right.

Here's the button I used in case anyone's interested. Handy that it has an adhesive dot already on it, only downside is it comes with 24ga wire (a bit fine for handling, not a current-capacity concern):

I have the same issue with forks I can't see. I am doing my firewood now and palletize it so the forks get used more.

I was thinking about a momentary switch to latch a relay to do the same thing when i was using forks. It would be powered thru the ignition and return to normal when the ignition switch was cycled off. A second normally closed switch could be used to cancel with out stopping the engine. It is a circuit used to start/ stop most motor controls. I bought some relays but hadn't sourced my switches yet.

May just have to do yours instead! Thanks for posting.

Agreed, but that's just a tad more involved. And, I think, fragile. Not to say that I won't some day do it...

I put a camera on mine when I got the grapple last year. I find that with the open cab on a sunny day and my wearing auto darkening glasses it is hard to see the forks on the display. Standing up to catch a look is where I am and holding the seat with my hand is not making it. I don't want to lock down the switch so that is why I want a switch circuit that resets to the original safety like your idea or mine. Maybe a timing relay would do what I want and reset after 10- 15 seconds? I am still talking about having to activated it each time before I stand, not bypass and forget.

i need to do that for snow blowing. im always on level ground but because im spun half around in the seat i trip the switch constantly on bumps.

My old BX22 had none of these seat switches, and I used that tractor for about 18 years and 800 hours and never fell out of the seat, or off of the tractor.

I have owned/used my Ford 8N for exactly 50 years..... no "safety devices", ever!
I am still here!

Mine 8N does have that neutral safety switch I use every time I start it standing next to it in the garage for the last 25 years!

Such a handy tractor size is why I bought the L2501.

My late '51 8N is in nearly perfect condition, and is on my lawn for sale.
No bites!
If no sale,......back in the barn it will go for the Winter.

My 1989 Ford (Shibaura) 1920 FEL is a WHOLE lot more machine than my '51 8N!

I upgraded from a Ford 860 to the MX5400. I have to say while on the 860 it is nice to be able to alternate between standing and sitting while brush hogging.
Dangerous yes, stupid probably, but sure gives the back a break. I don’t know if it’s all me being a dumb*** or just growing up in an era when there weren’t all the safety switches and stuff to protect you.
