Stingy on fuel

After wood chipping today, it's up to 4.2 hours. STILL will not take all the 2 gallons of diesel I pumped from the generator's tank.

That's considerably less than 0.5 gph! The JD 4010 at 18.5 hp ran 0.46 gph over 660 hours. The 2025R's usage was almost a direct prorate on engine hp of the 4010's figure: about 0.6 gph.

Well I use to have a yellow tractor before the orange one, and when the orange one came home to live I thought the fuel gauge was broken. It used about 1/3 the fuel the yellow one did for the same amount of mowing, I was a happy camper

FINALLY got it to take the rest of the 2 gallons of fuel, but barely, at 5.7 hours: 0.34 gph. That's almost as low as the 12.5 kw Isuzu, which would be much smaller on hp. About half of what any of the JDs used.

It looks like you did not get much of a penalty on the 26 over the 23, I have 15.9 hours and just put in a second 4 gallons so a total of 8 gallons plowing snow and using the grapple. I will keep a running total on fuel and hours.

To be accurate and to B737's point below the tractor is new and in keeping with the manual I have not had it over 1900 rpm yet.

you are not going to get 10-12 hours of work time out of a B2601, just not going to happen unless you are idling around doing nothing.

hook up a tiller, or brush hog, and you'll be stopping for fuel in about 4-6 hours

It'll go about 15 hours on a tank on the chipper and likely the bush hog. For snow blowing or tilling, it would use quite a bit more.

If fuel consumption is affecting you that much, then you shouldn't own a tractor. Get a horse and feed it well so it will do what your tractor is capable of.

Engines are tested and advertised using a parameter called BSFC which stands for :

Brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is a measure of the fuel efficiency of any prime mover that burns fuel and produces rotational, or shaft power. It is typically used for comparing the efficiency of internal combustion engines with a shaft output. It is the rate of fuel consumption divided by the power produced.

You are not going to find big differences between engines from any manufacturer if you use this parameter which is about as "real world" as you can get.

Put another 2 gallons in at 23.4 hours. That's 8 gallos: 0.34 gph, way less than the 0.46 the 18.5 hp JD 4010 used over 660 hours.

My JD 3020 took about 5 gallons of gas every time I moved snow. The Kubota uses much less. I was thinking less than a gallon of diesel for the same operation but I'm not real sure (it's been awhile) but much, much less fuel.

Ralph, my 3020 claimed 70-ish PTO hp. I'm sure the 4010 was more than that. Do you mean 80.5 instead of 18.5?

I’ve never really been able to dial in actual result on any of mine…I don’t run them at a consistent rpm for a full hour much less a full tank…I just don’t use them that way. I normally use three hours or less at a time and occasionally I get 6 hrs at a clip…a full day is very rare. I generally have 3 speeds…idle (prior to up to temp), running but not working and that is in the 1800-2000 rpm range, RPM speed for PTO use or WFO which is when I am actually using it. I rarely if ever have it out of the Low ratio. For my previous BX and my current B I’d say they average somewhere between .5ish and .65ish gph…the MX seems to be closer to more than double that at somewhere between 1.5 and 1.9ish gph. Big girl is thirsty/eats more and a lot more junk in the trunk (more to maintain). I don’t idle the MX as much as I don’t understand DPF enough, so I let it warm up a little and then I am to the medium speed and by time I get to wear I am going to work it she is ready to work. I let the B idle a lot more when I get off the tractor. I try not to idle the MX so much. I am not sure what that means and unless there is a concern from an expert but I only gauge as big differences in general consumption to suggest something wrong to tell me take to an expert. There really is nothing I would do different without some instruction of something that would wear the engine. It’s what it is. Even as fuel is increasing, a couple bucks of extra fuel is better than all the complaining that would come with me asking spousal unit to grab a shovel and show her where to dig.
