My '11 M7040 with 1500 hrs on tach died when my daughter backed it out of barn. I've cleaned the water separater filter, installed new fuel filter, made sure tank was FULL of fuel, blown compressed air from water filter to tank. Engine will start & run a few seconds then die. Next time I attempt to start no smoke is emitted from muffler. How does one check transfer(lift) pump mounted on inj pump? Thanks for any ideas or replies. PS: I've been bleeding diesel fuel systems since the 70's but I've tried everything I can think of.
Thanks,Jim

Take the fuel hose from the lift pump to fuel filter off and crank the engine for a few seconds. It should pump a stream of fuel that surges with each revolution of the engine.

Did you pump the filter primer pump on top of the filter head to fill the filter after you changed it?

Does it have a jet start knob?

If nothing else take the fuel line loose where it hooks to the injector pump and crank the engine over. If your fuel system is in working order it will pull fuel to the pump and squirt it out from the loose line. Tighten the line and it should start without much issue.

Here is the bleeding procedure.

Although I have not tried it, I suspect you could continue to pump fuel manually to see if the engine keeps running which would then point to the mechanical pump being a problem

I'm going to remove line from lift pump on inj pump this AM. I filled new filter with fuel before it was installed. Yes been pumping hand pump but engine won't continue running.
Thanks,Jim

Thanks for photo but I have a M7040 WSM. Although pumping hand pump was continued after engine began running it still wouldn't continue running. I'm stumped if mechanical pump isn't the problem. On another forum it was suggested that hold-in circuit on fuel IP solenoid may have failed.
Thanks,Jim

TX Jim, Have you checked the fuel solenoid relay? The fuel and glow plug relays are the same. You can switch them and see if that fixes the problem. The only problem is, you have to remove the instrument cover to get to them. The hardest part is getting the center screw out. I slid the hood off to get to mine. NAPA carries those relays, if that's your problem.

If the fuel cut solenoid is the issue, they are about 75 bucks at the dealer, just replaced mine on my M9. You an get them cheaper on Flea-Bay but I prefer the dealer part in as much as there are quite a few different ones.

If the fuel cut solenoid is faulty, the engine won't run, gets no fuel.

Thanks for replies. Fuel solenoid clicks when key is turned to on position. I was advised this morning by a Kubota dealer with the handle of jm that the solenoid hold in circuit may be faulty. I'm waiting on my friend to check it because my permanent nerve damages severely limits the use of my hands.

Pretty easy to diagnose, just remove the 2 allen head screws that hold in on the pump, extract it and turn on the key. The plunger should retract and stay retracted.

I bet it's either the fuel cut solenoid of the fuel pump and pumps are dirt cheap of Flea Bay and more expensive at your dealer. I too have nerve damage in my hands. Sometimes it's hard to work around.

I finally got my neighbor who is a qualified diesel tech to come help me. He pumped hand pump much longer than the other people I had helping me & engine started running so I guess it had air between hand pump & inj pump.
Thanks to all that replied,Jim.

Great it is running again!.

Thanks for providing the final chapter. Everyone learns.

Any thoughts on why air got in?

My thought is line from tank to water seperater or fitting in tank was stopped up because when old canister fuel filter was removed it only had about 2'' of fuel in it. I had person helping me blow compressed air into line that leads from water seperater to tank then I guess it took more pumping on hand pump than the 1st or 2nd person wanted to pump. I did limit some pumping required by filling new filter with fuel before installation. I'm just thankful it will run again without having to buy expensive parts.

If I recall, the pumping instructions suggest you hold the return line and pump until you feel pressure pulsations in that line.

I'm considering adding an electric fuel pump to my M7040 similar to the one I installed on M4900 that I owned to eliminate the need for pumping hand pump when changing fuel filter or correcting fuel blockage problem.

When changing fuel filters or emptying the seperator, I refill them to the top with fresh diesel and I've never had to 'pump' anything.

When fuel is dumped into the filter you are risking getting contaminants into the injection pump, since that fuel hasn't gone through the filter.
