Hello all,

First post. I just pulled the trigger on a new BX25D-1 TLB. Added TPH arms, block heater, QA on loader, pallet forks, mechanical thumb on the hoe, BX2755HD blower (hydraulic rotation/electric deflection) and a Bush Hog CBX48 box scrapper.

Really excited to take delivery in about a week and get to work!! I'm sure there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and advice here ... so thank you in advance!!

Just out of curiosity, how much and/ or what kind of land do you have? What projects do you have planned? Welcome to OTT

Hello,

I have about 50 acres of land. 99% of which is conservation land/bush that can never be developed ... that's why it was so attractive to me. The land is enrolled in the Managed Forrest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP - Ontario Canada people may know about this). Basically you promise to be a good steward of the land - plant trees, put in walking/ATV trails, add bird feeders, watch for invasive species etc ... seek professional assistance when needed (you have a forestry company make your plan and it gets approved/denied ... then you follow your plan). In return I save 75% on my property taxes for the land portion that I have enrolled in the program.

My land is wet in places so I wanted a machine that was light and 4x4 for putting in/maintaining trails. This summer I transplanted 25 trees between 3-4' in height. This was back breaking with a shovel! I think it will be easier with a hydraulic shovel! I have many more trees to move up to the front of the property to enhance the landscaping. I have a 125+ foot gravel driveway to keep clear in winter and maintain in summer. The properties two flowing artesian wells are spring fed. When it rains, the water doesn't disappear as quickly as I would like. This summer we had torrential downpours and I was standing up to my ankles in water about 20' in front of the house. The natural slope of the property will lend itself nicely to French drains and a drywell but I have to get the water to the side of the house first. I also plan to put my downspouts and sump pump discharge underground and into a drywell.

I have two Deere lawn tractors (LA140 & L120) both with mower decks and utility trailers. I will therefore not be mowing with the BX ... this was actually one of the only BX complaint I found on the net ... not the best for mowing?? Someone else will have to chime in because I'll likely never know.

I have to level a section of land near the road and build a bus shelter. My kids are 2-4-6 years old which means I'll have kids in school for the next 14 years ... may as well put in the effort and make it a good structure.

There is a possibility my parents are going to sell their home and build me a 4 car garage with accommodations above in the next few years (for them to live out their retirements years). I can trench for electrical and water and save money there ... maybe do a portion of their septic prep myself as well ... more research required.. This would mean increasing the length of the driveway to service the new building.

I am also seriously looking at a Baumalight TX12 PTO generator (12 KW). Last winter we were without power for several days which wasn't fun. I'd need to have an electrician install the necessary disconnect on the side of the house and then the BX could power the whole home as long as the diesel supply holds out.

Chipper (Woodland Mills WC68 6" hydraulic feed) and tiller (Land Pride - reversing model - more research required) are on the short wish list as well.

The most important factor when it came to my choosing this machine is that I am in no hurry. I just wanted a light, multi tasking machine that wouldn't break the bank.

I'm sure there are jobs I have forgotten about or haven't even realized yet but that's the basics so far.

I have the bx 2670. The mowing with the factory blades was not acceptable but a change of the blades to the gator blades made it sooo much better. No complaints at all. You'll find the lifting capacity of the fel falls a little short sometimes but that just means take a smaller bite. For me, the only complaint is the ground clearance but all the attributes make up for that. There are times I need an L series but I can't have both.

Agreed. My father has an L but time to drive to my house I just make more trips with the bx.

Bigworrm: What do you use for plowing snow? Bx will do it but I'd add a rear blade to the collection. We have some folks here with what is called Managed
Forest and taxes on that are almost zero. Needless to say that has irritated neighbors and has resulted in some unfriendly situations. I hope you have better luck.

What I've just bought is all I have for implements. No rear blade or anything for plowing yet. I suspect I'll leave the box scrapper on with the scarifiers off/or up and have something to push/pull with (even if only 48" wide). Can add weight to the box scrapper if necessary. Hopefully with the ground being frozen, it won't just tear up gravel but I can always float it just above the surface. This winter is going to be very experimental for me, first rural property, first tractor. Much to learn. I'm secretly hoping I won't need a plow but time will tell.

I'm loving the idea of a managed forest, I'm not sure why my properties enrolment in such a program would upset anyone. I know I would rather live next to a beautiful forest filled with wildlife than a forest slated for development. I have very like minded neighbours so I'm not expecting issues.

Shouldn't be long now .... I'll have a BX and a big grin on my face!!!

Big worm in our area they have limits on how much a community, county, etc can raise tax budgets. When properties come off the tax rolls, guess who gets higher property tax, since budget says the same and fewer regular folks have to support it.?? Those neighbors do. That's what irritates them. The managed forest must have access for hunters, unless the owner pays just a little more and posts the land. Again, not good for neighbors. My bet is you Canadians are even tougher on the neighbors.

Here in Pa its pretty much the same,, if you go for the clean and green tax thing the land has to be open to public use. You cant post it and keep people out. And of course there is nothing wrong with people harvest the critters from your land, it keeps things healthy and growing. Unless you are thinking of keeping it all to your self, then you pay the taxes and post it

It goes without saying, sounding off about the low taxes and the "do gooder" approach might not be too welcome in the area. I speak from experience where I used to live. Those folks ended up with absolutely no one nearby that would have anything to do with them. After nearly20 years there that was not sch a happy neighborhood for them after all.

Congrats on the new tractor. People are going to complain about taxes, but that's not what this thread is supposed to be about. Enjoy your machine and post pictures

In Ontario, property tax is based on the assessed value. The logic is that since managed forest is less valuable than land that is/can be developed, it is taxed at a lower rate. There is a minimum acreage required to enroll in the program, over and above land occupied by the residence, which is taxed at the normal rate. The undeveloped land applies no pressure on the school system, garbage collection, policing, road maintenance or other tax-supported government service, therefore such designation does not add to the municipality's financial burden, nor does it shift any burden upon one's neighbours.

Such designation has no bearing on a property owner's rights under the Trespass to Property Act. The owner is free to prohibit entry, allow entry or allow entry only for certain activities, at their sole discretion.

Hey torch: Sounds nice, but by moving the land into the managed program from a regular taxed situation, there is no effect on the other properties taxed normally? Hard to believe. Those Ontario politicians willing to, accept less money to work with?

Property assessment is an inherently unfair and regressive system -- one pays taxes based on the potential value of one's land without regard to one's earnings or ability to pay.

That said, which is more unfair: taxing empty forest that does not cause expense for the municipality at a lower rate or at the same rate as land use requiring sewers and water and roads and schools? I would argue that it is unfair of residential and business property owners to expect the owners of undeveloped forest land to subsidize municipal services they cannot use.

Everyone hates taxes, so back to the BX! If you use the BX for trenching your water, power and septic lines, it is very Do-able, I have used mine for many. It takes a little longer than a big tractor, but it's digs great for a SCUT. Now digging a hole for the septic tank will be quite a task! You may want to speak with the crew that brings your tank out and see what they get to dig and drop the tank, especially a big concrete one.
A PTO generator works fine off your tractor, keep plenty of extra diesel on hand! We have quite a few power outages here in N. Idaho, and my neighbor has a PTO unit for his tractor that works good, but he has to remove the backhoe, install the unit, put in the driveshaft, drive over to the power/ pump house, fire it all up, manually switch off all the power( shared well with two neighbors). The power never goes off at an opportune time! For a little more $$, we opted for a stand alone backup generator, that runs off propane ( no gas cans to haul or pour) with an automatic transfer switch, and auto start for the genny. It has worked out very well for us, but we're out far enough, where we use it at least a couple days s year
