Hydro Transmission question on a BX.

Just brought home a nice 2370 with FEL and 54" deck. I have a question about the hydro.

If i'm going down a hill and let off the pedal is the tractor supposed to stop completely and the hydro hold it back or is it supposed to slow down to a slow creep and gradually go down the hill?

It depends on how steep the hill is, slight grade my BX25 will stop and hold as it increases it will roll without the parking break on.

Not sure if that is how they are supposed to work, but all the HST that I have driven work that way.

Mine starts rolling on a gradual grade. I think it should hold its ground on a little hill. I'll have to check things out. I'm wondering if they filled the transmission before they put the loader on and forgot to refill once the cylinders on the loader were filled. Maybe its just low???

I"m not real sure how its supposed to work.

All of ours stop and hold unless it's pretty steep the it will kind of move every 30 sec or so a few inches.

Weight of the machine has a lot of bearing on the situation. A BX might stop on the hill side at 20d slope, where as a 25D might also take a few more feet to stop and then creep a bit. The gravity of the situation does not change but the friction and angular momentum does as the angle changes. Plus worn seals and exact pedal placement will have an affect on the stopping distance. By BX-25D would stop going down a 22.5d hillside......but that is in 4wd drive, it would break traction and start to accelerate if not. Even my B7100 will "creep" a little on a slight hillside, but the pedal slop has more to do with that.

I think all will creep - over time and increase of angle.

This is a brand new out of the crate tractor. less than 2 hrs on it. It wont hold itself back on a 10 degree slope. It doesnt "creep", it rolls slowly down the hill. It wont hold itself in my regular yard without setting the parking brake.

I'm guessing something is wrong here.

Probably just an adjustment, my first BX did the same thing, instead of creeping forward, it would go backwards. The dealer adjusted it and problem solved.

You can try a light duty grease on your zerk for the HST pedal and I "think" there may be return springs under there, can't hurt to crawl under and look round, had a stick jammed in one of mine.

Mine will "creep fast" in Rabbit. In Turtle, it nearly stops and barely moves.

I know i was in high gear when i tested it in my yard. I'll have to try it again in low and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out tomorrow after work.

Just wanted to say if you're dismounting the tractor, relying on the HST pedal to hold the tractor on a hill is pretty risky business. If there's any measure of slope, I'll drop the loader and any 3 point attachment to the ground and/or set the brake.

As others note, on level ground, the HST should go to a neutral, stopped position when you remove your foot. It shouldn't creep. On slopes, that's another story, and a bit of drifting downhill would be quite normal.

I've found out that the older series, the 50 series and some of the 60 series are set up different than the 70 series. The 50 series will through you into the steerng wheel if you let off the pedal. Customers complained and they loosened up they hydro for the following years. Slow creep down the hill is normal in high range and even slower creep down the hill is normal in low range. And it gets even slower in 4x4. But according to 3 different dealers, its normal for the 70 series to do this.

My BX2370 will stop dead in its tracks when you release the pedal. I only have only had it a few months with about 12 hours on it. I've never let it set to see if it creeps forward. Good luck with your new tractor. I bet it just needs a minor adjustment.

If i'm crusing along on flat ground and release the pedal it almost stops dead, if i'm on a hill going down hill and release the pedal it almost stops dead, then slowly creeps down the hill.

I was under the impression it was supposed to stop and hold itself back on the hill. But i'm starting to find out that this isnt the case.

I will say this...While mowing yesterday, i found out that having the back tires filled makes for one bumpy ride. I didnt realize how uneven my yard actually was...lol

Loaded tires shouldn't make the ride any rougher if they were loaded correctly and have the correct air pressure. The tires should only be loaded until it just runs out of the valve stem at the 12 o'clock position. That leaves enough air space to allow for cushioning. Chances are if your ride is rough there is too much air pressure in the tires.

Taking your foot off the HST pedal, the tractor will still move a few feet and usually stop. Foot off the pedals should be thought of as a 'Neutral' and not 'Parked'. Then you apply the brake (and set the parking brake if you are getting off).
If on a hill, be sure it is in 4WD to transfer braking effect to the fronts too. Great advice about lowering all implements to the ground too.

Filled with a washer fluid type solution. Methanol/water maybe? This tractor is WELL worth its price. I've mowed 3 or 4 times already on different parts of the property and its did wonderful. The FEL i worth its weight in gold. I've already moved about 10 tons of gravel and another 10-15 tons of dirt i've had piled up around the property for years. Its making fast work of anything I throw at it. I haven't gotten the hang of taking the bucket off and putting it back on yet....Takes me about 15 mins or so to put it on and around 10 to take it off. But i'm learning.

What grease should I buy for my grease gun? I'm guessing a high temp grease instead of the $1.49 tubes from wal mart.
