I sandblased my screens, but then i have a large blast cabinet. Makes all kinds of ugly go away.
Been using paint stripper, letting it set, then putting in a bucket of water and brushing it. I wished I had access to a cabinet. Would have made it quick and easy. Gotta straighten out the mesh in a couple of spots. And tweak the frame straight.

Same with the grill, and the grill that houses the headlights. Someone must have hit a tree with it. It was a little cross eyed :p:D

Gotta get me some new headlights before painting the hood. This way, if the mounts need to be modified, i can do it before painting :D

Seems like you're winning the battle but I wonder how much an auto body shop would have charged to blast everything from the get go if you removed and carried the pieces in?

Way more than they would to hit it now as a pre-paint prep.

Just a thought.

Probably would have been easier. But I'm in the process of quitting smoking, so it gives me something to do to burn off the excess energy and stress ;):D hood is done. Side panels got one last coat of stripper. Letting them set for a bit. Then will clean them up. And then run the hood and side shields to town and steam clean them :D

Daren, I'm proud of you. "But I'm in the process of quitting smoking, so it gives me something to do to burn off the excess energy and stress hood is done."

We had a good friend who just couldn't, wouldn't, shoulda quit. Her funeral was last week. She gave up a lot of years for that habit.

Stay busy, chew gum, whatever.....but beat it, I pray.

Thanks Len :) it's been rough. It helps that what ever they are putting in them to slow the burn makes me sick.

Got the hood and side guards steam cleaned. Now to hit them with 80 grit give them a rinse. Then they will be ready for some acetone and the rust preventer :D

Took a few minutes and knocked the expanded metal back into shape and straighten the side shields also

Got everything treated with the rust reformer. One thing to watch out for with the stuff. It's really thin, so it likes to run. Got a couple spots I'll have to block before priming

D2cat, never figured vinegar would be that effective. In daren's case buying a bathtub full wouldnt be all that cost effective, and with electrolysis its basically water so not such a shame to pour out.

Daren, been following your thread and have been looking at other ideas. Here's a guy with rusted metal, no paint with vinegar & water.

That's really interesting. Never thought of using vinegar for rust. I have used it to remove caked on salt from pump ends with great results. I would dump about 10 gallons in the volute, and top up with water. Gave it around a 50/50 mix. Only thing is, it foams. So make sure and due it outside. I had quite the mess, the first time I did it.

Daren,

first of all - your metal looks soooo good - I thought you chromed it!!!:p:)
It looks so slick - shoot, paint aint gonna stick to it!:)

And as for the vinegar bath..............now can you imagine what that will do inside a engine block that has run for about 30 minutes at 200F ???:D:eek::)

The inside will be so damn clean you could eat off of it ! - but, it must come out and/or be neutralized, otherwise it acts like a termite........never knows when to stop eating away!:)

Good for you Darren. Lit up my last smoke 6/16/14 at 11:30pm. Enjoyed it but I haven't had one since. Hang tough; it gets easier.

Awesome work! Good for you on the progress AND dumping the cancer sticks. (Just thing how many mods you can pay for on the wife's new trailer for what you spent on cigarettes!)

Promise us you are going to paint that top quality paint after all that hard work!!! (No Majic crappolla)

Oh... and remember, orange requires a white or light grey primer...

Daren, I want to emphasize what Ray is telling you, "Promise us you are going to paint that top quality paint after all that hard work!!! (No Majic crappolla)"

At least get some paint you can put a hardener in. You'll be much happier down the road!

I actually looked at the magic stuff at tsc, and was not impressed. For one, the local store only sells the reducer. Doesn't sell the hardner. When i pulled the info from majics website on my phone and showed it to the folks at tsc, they got the deer in the headlights look. Immediately decided to pass on it ;)

There's a place I'm gonna check locally that sells automotive paint and the works that goes with it. I just forgot to grab a couple paint chips so they could mix me a close match :D

Coworker has a high volume, low pressure sprayer I can borrow for the job.

Got quite a bit of blocking and priming to do between the hood and fenders

I went looking for automotive paint after work and was really surprised. For giggles I stopped into the local Sherwin Williams store and inquired about there products. They didn't deal with auto paints at that store. But had an automotive paint supply store across town.

So I stopped in, told them what I was doing. And needed to see there paint swatches. Now here's the surprise :D They had kubota Orange 1 and 2 :D:D and the colors for all the other tractors and construction equipment as well. Guess it never hurts to ask ;) They did not have the kubota grey or blue. So I flipped through till I found a close match to the blue on the motor and frame.

So, for $150, I got a quart of single stage acrylic enamel kubota Orange number 2, a pint of Komatsu blue  the reducer, hardener, and all the fixings to mix it accurately, stirring sticks, and strainers :D
