Couple of points about post hole diggers:

Most of the older farmers around here chained their augers to trees. You don't have to lift anything to hook it up, and it isn't in contact with the ground or water to cause rust.

My homemade one has a six foot piece of 1" pipe on it that you can use from the tractor seat to give enough down pressure to get it started drilling into the ground, or if you have a helper it can be easily turned around so he can do the hard part while staying away from the turning parts.

They sure are a pain to put on and off. I use a come along to lift mine off the tractor attaching to a truss in my shed. This way it won't take up a lot of room in my shed lying down and crawling over it all the time. I have it directly above my bush hog to make efficient use of the space.
