There's a U1 and a U1R battery... look the 'same', except polarity is 'R'eversed.
The reg/rect unit doesn't have 'reverse polarity protection' so will fry and become a 'wire' rather easily. Used to design/build them decades ago........
Wasn't there when the initial 'fun' occoured, would have been interesting to see though....
