I've thought about getting a few chickens in the past year or so. I wouldn't want a ton; we only go through so many eggs, but I feel it would be good to expose my almost 3-year-old to, give him some responsibility, hands dirty, yada yada. I would need to figure out a coop and run area that won't just make a buffet for the foxes, hawks, and yotes...
Our chickens(no rooster) stay in a mobile coop 24x7. I only have to feed and water them every 7 to 10 days. I usually clean the coop then also, usually takes about 30 to 45min. Eggs are pulled from the nest boxes from the outside of the coop/door. When temperatures drop 30s and below, I usually go in and shut the door to the roost box after sunset. I have reptile heat lamp on a timer in the roost box. I'm gonna set up a warming plate under thier waterer tomorrow, we have some real cold temperatures gonna hit us next week.
We love our chickens and they require minimal time from us(with the right set up) and it's so rewarding to grab eggs daily. All our veggie scrapes get chopped and fed to them. We save all the egg shells, they get baked usually when we're using the over for our food. The shells then get broken up into small pieces and fed back to the chickens in thier feed, the shells are 95% calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, and other organic matter. Very beneficial to the chickens.

Here are some other calves that JP fathered. I'm gonna ask to see her auction tickets, so I can configure JP percentage of males vs females. I know it's a high percentage of males, but I think it's worth tracking.

That amount of acreage is just mind boggling to me.

Years ago when we first moved to the country, I downloaded a properly line app, like landglide or something.

I was used to seeing anywhere from a few acres to several hundred around us. Had a couple spots in the county next door where you'd see a thousand or so....biggest was like 1800 acres.

Stumbled upon texas. And the first section we saw from King Ranch was like 35k acres. Next one to it 20k, and so on..... uncomprehensible amounts of land.

Added a couple more 4runners to my fleet. Most likely were going to sell off The Laundry Fairy's Lexus LX 570.
The boys and The Laundry Fairy will be driving 4runners, I'm gonna stick to my Tacoma and Farm Truck.

I made an offer yesterday to pick up another 13 acre farm next to me. It's probably the last track of land next to mine that I could ever buy for a very long time. 2 neighbors have houses built and the other neighbor, 325ac track, 6th Generation ranch owner with a big house and shops etc. The other 300 plus acres owned by the South Texas Childrens Home(Baptist).

Honestly I should probably be buying a summer home up near @McMXi

Only if you like low humidity, beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, hundreds of thousands of acres of public land, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park .... and tourists! 😂 I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about.

The old saying goes “if you like the view, buy it…”. 😉

Small scale, but a few years ago we had the opportunity to buy 1.75 acres next to the house.

Was able to get the property at a very reasonable price.

Was site of a 3-story chicken coop about 30x140’. Long since gone.

Could have been used as a building lot for a house. Too close for my comfort.

Nice maple lot. Now neighbors put almost 200 maple taps on our 3 adjoining parcels. Lot still has a very decent concrete pad where the chicken house was.

Gives us about 300 yards of road frontage. Also own the hill behind the house.

While less than 7 acres total, we still own most of the property we can see behind the house. Not a bad thing…..
