Freeze warning issued for Saturday, (correction) today a high temp today of 38, low temp tonight 38 lol, winchill in the upper 20's. It's been misting most of day with a few periods light rain. I'm really hoping the moisture locks in the ground temperatures. I'll check the rain gauges in the morning, very much needed moisture though.

I just got home, took my youngest son to college for the Spring semester. Spent over 9 hours in the truck today, my arss is wore out..
I kinda wish I planted more acres.

Went and checked on JP today and gave him cubes, he was a bit hesitant at first. He is probably pissed, and wants out of vet jail.

Lots of bucks moving this week.
Only after cull bucks or the giant wall hanger I saw last week, no picture, he doesn't come to the feeders, but I have seen him around a waterer. My brother spotted him on the neighbors place on Saturday. Anyways some nice ones came in this morning.

No antler restrictions here in S. TX.

But a good portion of Texas requires a 13inch inside measurement, usually the antlers will be at the ear tips.

I've never needed a measuring tape to go hunting before but a calculator is sometimes needed.😂 Tine count is generally the way to determine legal/illegal here. Parts of season any buck, or 4 point, or spike, etc.

In VA it's "Antler or Antlerless" Your tags are marked accordingly. In many counties the antlerless deer season goes longer and fewer restrictions. Harvest an Antlered deer; you typically need to harvest an antlerless deer before another antlered can be.

The TX antler restrictions is only 61 out of 254 Texas counties, creates more opportunities for a hunter to shoot a trophy buck. The restrictions also leaves better genetics out there to breed (population of 5 million deer). In the early years, these restrictions pissed a lot of folks off, cause you can't eat them antlers. But today now you can shoot a bigger body & antler buck(s) in those same restricted counties. Research has shown its overall better for the deer and now the hunter.

Like I said, No antler restrictions here in South Tx. This is a 5 deer County, no more than 3 bucks. I can almost shoot a trophy buck (weighing in 180 to 210lbs) on 70 acres low fence about every other year here. But, I don't, I like to leave that opportunity to one of my guest or allow it to continue to breed.

As a land owner, I like prefer to implement those same 13in antler restrictions here, excluding cull bucks( no or tiny brawl tines, bad genetic antler structure etc). When I allow someone to hunt here, I tell them what they can or cannot shoot, if I don't manage the resources(Texas owns the wildlife) you bet the state will eventually come in and tell land owners what they can and can't shoot/do.

Last year and this year, it's been all cull bucks, and there are some really nice bucks out there. I will only shoot a trophy buck this week(last week to hunt big bucks) if it's a 160 inch B&C buck, something bigger than what I already shot.

Bow Deer Season here September 28, 2024 to November 1, 2024.
General Deer Season November 2, 2024 to January 19, 2025.
Special Late Deer Season January 20–February 2, 2025. (127 days, No blackout dates).

If you have a longer deer season than me, I'll buy you a beer!!

If you include Urban Archery in the counties offered, plus the other normal, Archery, Muzzleloader, & Firearms seasons through the state, our season goes from September 7th 2024 - March 30th, 2025. Sunday hunting is allowed on private land, and public land management agencies can allow it at their discretion.

That's a long season, with restrictions, IMO, it would be hard to accomplish all those archery days....

But on hindsight, Praise Jesus Coldbeer appoved!
I'll be in VA, in the summer.

I agree there are restrictions and would be hard to accomplish the archery days. VA did recently allow the use of crossbows for non-disabled hunters though.

Let me know if you're close by this summer 😄 , cold beer is always good beer.

I agree, that is a long season.

New York State has lengthened season also.

Not sure, but think it runs mid-September (or 10/1?) until 12/31. Season is segmented for bow/gun, etc. Crossbow has gotten popular and many of the rural areas allow rifles. For decades was shotgun only.

As much as I love venison, I haven't hunted deer in years. Was more into long-range varmint (woodchuck/ground hog) hunting. Advent of coyotes and loss of small dairy farms took care of a lot of the woodchuck guys like me. Used to get about 100/year.

Eggs are almost 50 cents each now!
I haven't bought eggs in years, I'm thankful for my chickens.

$15 for 3 dozen

A LOT of folks around here have gotten layers too. Can be seasonal when it gets real cold.

It works, but it can be hard to justify costs associated with home-grown versus the store in some circumstances.

My former co-worker would give them away because the husband got too many chickens.

Fishers took care of all of them......then they had to put $1,000 into the coop.....

I put less than $350 into my coop, I would think we already got our ROI back. I just reached out to the gal where we get our Hy-line brown chickens from and asked to buy a few more pullets.

I've thought about getting a few chickens in the past year or so. I wouldn't want a ton; we only go through so many eggs, but I feel it would be good to expose my almost 3-year-old to, give him some responsibility, hands dirty, yada yada. I would need to figure out a coop and run area that won't just make a buffet for the foxes, hawks, and yotes...
