Got on the road at 4:30 this am to drive up to the Orlando Wetlands in Christmas, FL. Took 2-1/2 hours but they have a rookery with spoonbills that I wanted to shoot.

The 1911 was my first love. Never a daily driver but would be among the last I'd let go of for sure.

A SIG P220 was mine. I bought my first around '92 when SIG only offered five or six models at the most. But when 2011 rolled around I figured that I'd better get at least one 1911 to commemorate the 100th anniversary. Then I got a little obsessed, and since I like sets of things, I ended up with these Ed Brown Special Forces models among others. The bottom two were standard models but I added some custom features to the top one when I placed the order.

A good 1911 is like a nice automatic watch. The appeal of an object can reach far beyond its function.

Well, since some people posted guns, these aren't great pictures, but just a reminder not to use the "good" ammo shooting steel.

those are some great shots
what camera and lens do you use?
Thanks DaTow'd. Even a monkey gets luck once in a while ;)

I switched to a mirrorless body about 2 months ago. This is a learning trip to Florida for me with the camera.
It's a Canon R1 body with a 100-500mm zoom. It's one smart camera. My old body is about 14 years old. Much has changed!

I went mirrorless several years ago and will never look back. The ability to make exposure corrections and SEE the results in that excellent viewfinder before shooting is wonderful. I almost never get a shot with improper exposure anymore.

You are getting some great shots. It is amazing how fast and accurate the autoexposure/autofocusing functions are anymore.

Think we learned that as Contour Plowing..

Same area as last photo. Saw quite a lot of draft animals there.

Another 100 miles South. No Tractors within 50 miles.

Could have a lot of fun out there with my B9100 and loader...

What's the trick for capturing them in flight? My attempts at catching them hand-held have come up mostly empty-framed. Of course, if this is a trade secret . . .

lmao - you are asking the wrong person :)

I'll tell you what I know. . . I've shot a lot of action photography in the last 55 years. That includes airshows and motorsports. Those are two pretty predictable subjects though. They don't make 'surprise' direction changes, at least not usually.

I needed something to keep me occupied during this 2 month trip to Florida. It looked like the perfect opportunity to jump back into photography and learn to shoot birds in flight (BIF).
The first lesson i learned is it takes a lot of patience - something I don't have in abundance. After several outings I recognize some movements these birds make just before they leap into the air from a branch - usually :)

For the images I posted I focused on the bird and waited for them to take off. Shooting at 10 fps gets a lot of images in a hurry. The camera also supports 'pre continuous' shooting. ie It can record 1 second prior to me pressing the shutter button. So if you are .25 seconds slow to shoot, no worry the camera is smarter and faster than me. I used it once. It creates way too many images for me to edit through. If I was shooting sports, I would definitely use it.

Panning a bird is a lot harder than panning a racecar. I come up with my share of empty frames. If I can keep the bird in the frame the camera takes care of everything else. It's easier to pan if the bird doesn't fill the frame. I zoom out some. You can always crop.

For me its just practice practice practice. I'm obsessed now and determined to become proficient.

I remember what the instructor told me in my 1st darkroom class in 1971. "The difference between a good photographer and a photographer? A good photographer only shows his good work."

Pictures aren’t very good….

Every winter we have a “water feature” in our yard.

We live at a dead end of public water main.

Water system runs a line from neighbors house (at dead end) into our yard to flush line. Prevents freezing and also ensures water cycles to maintain disinfection.

Can tell it’s been a chilly winter. Got a pretty good sized iceberg working. There is a good sized sugar maple stump under there.

If I get anywhere near it, I immediately have to use the restroom….power of suggestion….😉

Met up with another photographer this am at sunrise at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary in Wellington, Fl to shoot some birds.

Doing the edit now. I like this one tho I have no clue what kind of bird it is.
