I will not be doing any work for a Karen. 🤣🤣🤣

Hell no.
Truthfully, I really don't know what the name/term "Karen" means. It's not part of my vocabulary.

Do know it's a derogatory semi-political term, and I don't get into politics.

Suggest you do the same here on OTT.

Political discussions are contradictory to the OTT Terms and Conditions.

A neighbor needing help is a neighbor needing help.

That's irrespective of their political affiliation.

It's what neighbors do.... ;)

Had 2 new 1/2in hyd diameter hoses made for the grapple. Took about 1 hour to sleeve them, not sure these nylon sleeves are even worth messing with. View attachment 147171
Are they nylon or kevlar? If nylon, yeah, you're probably right, but if they're kevlar, oh yeah, put 'em on, especially if that hose rubs anywhere at all.

HOWEVER: Consider the scenario where you're doing loader work to "help" a neighbor at their request.

You hit their house, vehicle, electrical pedestal, well casing, curb box, sewer clean-out, etc., etc., and cause damage.

You mean like this????

Pretty much, my outlook as always been that if I want good neighbors, I gotta be a good neighbor.

8 months after I moved into my current home (20 years ago), one neighbor gave me an old boat trailer for a 10' aluminum boat. A small tornado had touched down in my yard putting down nearly 40 trees which took me the better part of 6 months to clean up with nothing but hand tools and a power saw. He had watched me working my butt off to clean up a yard that had nearly 30 years of neglect, which naturally made his yard look better too. I converted it to a yard trailer (built a wooden bed on it and shortened the tongue about 4 feet) and still use it to this day to haul off leaves that I pick up in the finished part of my yard. It won't haul much weight, but does a bang up job of saving me all the running back and forth to empty the bags on my mower. He came over when I was building my shed and helped me lift the headers for the roll-up doors, I split some hickory I cut and gave it to him for his barbeque pit, he gave me some Boston Butt. This past year, I helped him trim out a brand new shed which is basically a mirror image of mine (which is actually stick frame). The fella's got more money than he knows what to do with, so he put all the bells and whistles on it, most of which I helped install. I did all the electrical and plumbing for him as well. If he has something I need, I pretty much just go get it, and vice versa. More recently, I helped the guy that lives across the street from him build a chicken yard/coop. I've dug up stumps and moved logs and brush for the guy to the west of me, and the one just past him as well. I've borrowed a trailer (before I got my own) from the guy across the street from me, and I rewired it with all new lights in thanks. Like I said, be a good neighbor, you'll have good neighbors. Fortunately for me, most of the folks in our 'hood are conservatives and those that aren't are still good people. Only a few 'woke' or liberal folks here that have been here about 2 years that typically keep to themselves, and I let them. Don't have to agree with their politics to be a good neighbor. If ANY of them asks for help, I was brought up to NEVER EVER stand and watch someone struggle with a task. If they make a habit of it, though, then we discuss compensation.

We have a great little 'hood with only one empty home which has grown up miserably, and as you say, needs some help to help out the ones that live either side of it. Don't have a bushhog, or I'd ask the owner (she's living in her mother's home in another part of town) if she wanted me to knock it down. She planted Thorny Olive shrubbery between her and the house next door. When I moved here, it was like 3 feet tall. It's now 30 feet tall, and there's volunteer stuff from it all over the neighborhood. Thorny Olive is a VERY invasive plant that gets so thick that even rabbits can't get through it. It will choke out everything around it and has already killed to really nice maples in her front yard which is the only part of the lawn she has cut.

Damn, I'm glad you finally took a breath and started a new paragraph! ;););)

Often times when folks don't break their thoughts, I just go on. I do enjoy your conversations here though.

As @D2Cat says - - I honestly couldn't read that. I was using a computer, and not tablet or phone.

Sorry, but it was a big F'n block of text that I couldn't get through and won't try to again.

I guess I'm just gonna have to say no to helping anyone. That's the safest thing. But it's hard for me because I like helping people but maybe it's not worth it anymore.

Maybe just evaluate and see what the risk maybe for each request.
I to enjoy helping folks. I have worked the potholes out of several of my neighbors gravel drives.
All for free some without them asking. Just knew it needed done.
Had one that did hire me to spread 2 tri axle loads of gravel.
Don't take on anything that looks questionable. Although the one that usually get you. is "unforeseen.

Oh man, that's not what I was trying to get across to you. Only, that you need to think about what you're doing. That's all. I get the no good deed goes unpunished all the time.

Maybe check to see if you can add an "inland Marine" type policy for your equipment. They "can" be quite inexpensive and worthwhile. It's worth a look.

Digging on the other hand is a whole different ballgame. Don't think that you have a hoe on your machine so not an issue for you.

It won't be long.

Just a word of caution. Should you decide to do that, you may want to check what type of insurance you have for that sort of thing. KTAC, "inland Marine" or commercial policies cover you....typical homeowners policies do not cover your equipment off of your property.

Just sayin' ;)
Great advice there. Those can cover your equipment off property.

My little BX is only covered by my homeowner's policy, and it's almost 12 years old.

I've done a bunch of work on all my neighbors' places (5). Been limited to mowing and snowblowing. Pretty low-risk stuff, and I understand the risk of going off my property. Each place requires less than 200 yards on the road.

During BIG snow storms, I've had requests to blow snow on driveways half-mile or more away. I decline.

HOWEVER: Consider the scenario where you're doing loader work to "help" a neighbor at their request.

You hit their house, vehicle, electrical pedestal, well casing, curb box, sewer clean-out, etc., etc., and cause damage. Often your "neighborly" neighbors can get adversarial and ask "how are you going to pay for that? "

As a contractor, @dirtydeed is well-versed at this kind of thing. He's done some great work in VERY tight quarters, but accidents happen. Contractor's have Commercial General Liability policies for that.

One thing some/many policies won't cover for the "Average Joe with a Tractor" is YOUR liability for damage you may cause to someone else's property. Homeowner's policies may, but I don't think it's a given.

If you anticipate doing work on neighbor's property, it's not a bad conversation to have with your carrier or agent.

My limited mowing or snowblowing has never caused me much concern. I've never had that conversation. If I were to get into anything more serious I would.

Just a suggestion. We live in a litigious society. Sometimes a Good Deed can't go unpunished.....which is sad.

Not suggesting you don't help your neighbors. Our little 'hood is 6 houses. Over 30+ years, I'm the only resident that has helped all the others.

In fact, I was trespassing on one property for 6 years to mow the lawn. Stately 4,000 square foot colonial house w/barns and 1-acre lawn was a former Egg Farm. In foreclosure for years.

House adjacent next door was owned by good folks. If I hadn't mowed it, their lawn would have been adjoined by a hay field.....I couldn't let that happen.

After the first time I knocked it down (3 feet tall), I knew I was in it for the Long Haul....6 years....

Didn't do it for the Bank that had in foreclosure and paid no attention to it....

Did it for the older folks/neighbors next door, who also have a beautiful house they take pride in. ;)

It's what neighbors do where I come from... ;)
Yeah, we will have a new neighbor soon, they are currently building a barndo on a 12.5 acres that's across from one small pastures. I haven't been too impressed with the alcoholic husband.

Already told the ranch hand, NOT doing any work over there, ever, we're just gonna try and be the good folks that we are and just good neighbors. Nothing more, nothing less.

I already told The Laundry Fairy, if I have to, I will high fence my West fence line and that will send a clear message.

Finally decided to get out and snow blow the driveway and yard area. Has been snowing steady since yesterday and still in the middle of a snowfall warning. Tapering off now and should stop by midnight. Only expecting 2-4 more inches. Then it is clear and cold for a week or so. -27c is -16.6f

I've working on firewood the last couple weeks. Limb wood and sort pieces previously cut and laying out in the woods I pick up with my little crane and trailer.

25_1_24-6.JPG

Most trees I cut are from thinning or just low quality like this odd shaped 3 stemmed maple that is blocking light from the young pole sized red oak across the trail.

I help neighbors with my machine on occasion. Sure they could sue me if something goes terribly wrong. Thus is life.

I guess it’s smart to limit personal liability, but I also think it’s possible to go overboard.

Might have some plowable snow tomorrow morning. But it's gonna be below zero. I'm not plowing in that. It can wait until Sunday or Monday haha.
