This is Weenie. You may have seen her on the ASPCA's 10 Most Wanted Posters
weenie.jpg

She is by far the deadliest cat we have ever known. House cat by day, pure stone cold killer the rest of the time. She does not have a litter box in the house, she goes outside. 365 days a year in any weather this cat goes out and kills at least two things a day. Birds of many varieties including foot tall wood peckers. Rodents of any type. Rabbits. She has brought back squirrels so big she had to drag them backwards - true story. The cat is amazing.

Does Weenie need an Arizona vacation?
We could use a cat like that!

From 2005 - we took a 'doors off' helicopter ride over Kilauea while it was quite active. Never thought I would get my wife in that helo :)
The volcano was quite active but most of the lava was flowing under a cooled 'skin' of rock. These shots are where the lava drops off into the sea. We were really lucky to catch a piece of the bench (the edge) breaking off and dropping into the boiling ocean.

In one of my long rides to the Canadian Northwest I stayed in Canmore, Alberta. It is just west of Calgary and south of Banff. In the very early morning I headed north and picked up Icefields Parkway. It's a beautiful area. As I rode by this lake I almost dropped my bike stopping as fast as I could. I walked down to the lake & shot this. When I turned around there had to be 10 cars parked on the road, all the drivers taking this shot

wall hanger right there. Very rare to have an almost perfectly smooth water surface. I try. In 15 years of looking for it I ain't seen it yet, and I'm on or near the water quite often. One day I drove over to the lake expecting to go fishing and when I got there, the water was so smooth it was time to take a picture before I dunked the boat. Then of course by time I get a camera ready the gar started breaking the surface. So much for "smooth".

That old saying, "Success is that intersection where preparation crosses opportunity" (pretty close sentiment anyway) is never more true than in photography.
That shot was probably taken about 6 in the am.

The old Farmington Canal has been repurposed to be a walking trail. There are some pretty long stretches done now but when it's finished it will go from New Haven up into Massachusetts. In some areas they have restored some of the old locks. This shot was taken next to the canal in Cheshire, apparently abandoned by a farmer years ago. Adds to the ambiance.

Temperature inversions...out in the high desert at this time of year it is not uncommon to have temperature inversions that can last for up to 2 weeks. A layer of fog blankets the valley floors (elevation usually 4000 - 6500 feet) while the mountains (with elevations 13,000+ feet) are bright and sunny. Down in the fog the temperature won't rise much above 20 degrees while up in the mountains it is warm and sunny. I went in search of some sunshine back in January of 1994 and found it. Scans of Kodachrome slides.

I lived in a town invisible in this shot under the fog. Note the highway lower right leading into the fog bank. The mountain on the horizon is 11,000+ feet in elevation.

Shifting the view a bit further north, more mountain peaks sticking out of the fog....

Another Robin shot. The nest was about 8' from where I sit in my home office. The 'parents' got used to seeing me and I would slowly wave my hand at them. They (or somebody that looks like them) come back every year. Unfortunately sometimes they build their nests too high in the Rhododendron bush and I can't set the camera up to get a good shot. This year they cooperated and made it low enough :)

There’s a 7,000 lb Minneapolis Moline somewhere under 3 foot of snow. The tractor and loader are covered with a canvas.

Never saw Sugar Maples holding that much snow. Testament to how fast it came down....5+ “ per hour.
