Depends on how big a valve you need. For years I have used plastic 1/4"npt valves drilled & tapped directly into the side/bottom edge of blue plastic barrels for my drip system. No trouble or leaks for many years.

Was gifted a Stainless Steel chain on my trip back east. .408 dia, 22ft long. Not quite as strong as steel chain, but not a problem for what I haul. Pretty stuff.

I used this for decades for nearly everything. It is good for gas, oil, diesel, most solvents, water, high pressure, low pressure, steam. It is clay based. I mainly like it for NPT threaded connections, like hydraulic fittings. I have never had a joint leak using this stuff, but I can't say...
