It has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 30+ years, 0°F is about the normal low.

Out here, i would also be concerned about temps. Where my tractor lives, it might see minus 18F, and plus 120F.

Piston has a female cone shaped back, and the rod has male radius, so they "self guide" together on reassembly. Lube everything with hydraulic oil.

Yes, the rod will just rest on the cylinder wall. Push the lift arms down to move the piston to the highest position, then I used a magnet to lift the piston out.

Mine was the same way when I bought it, except it dropped fast. Seal was bad, (large o-ring) plus the backing ring was gone. New seal, backing ring, & cover seals and it's been good for 15+ years.
