I changed the hydraulic fluid and both filters on my ZD331 recently, and have a problem not encountered after 6 previous HST oil changes between 2 zd mowers....
Using sudt/2 fluid, correct amount replaced and confirmed on stick. I drain the trans and axles, then add about 8 qts, idle the machine with gentle forward / reverse movement, shut down and add the remaining 4.8 qts.
Symptoms are the machine initially operates fine, in a few minutes of idling the machine will not move forward or reverse. The hydraulic deck lift is also delayed and slow in raising the deck. After operating the motion levers for several minutes (with some loud groaning), the machine starts moving as normal. The deck still raises slower than usual. Sounds good, however, after mowing with no movement issues for several hours I put the mower away and have the same exact symptoms the following day.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a possible suction leak.
Couple of quick checks....double gasket, old gasket accidentally left in place? Accidentally put filters in wrong/opposite position? Filter accidentally cross threaded and not square?

I know the gasket is not doubled, and no fluid leaks. I did use an aftermarket hst filter (suction), I will replace it with an OEM filter and see what happens.
Thanks for responding.

So it was definitely a defective aftermarket hst suction filter. Got the OEM filter installed today and all is well.

Glad you had a win, I'm happy with aftermarket for most items (plain hydraulics), but HST, definitely OEM
