What did you do to or on your Kubota today?

Well I started a new project yesterday. Started building anyway. I have wanted a building to park the tractor and several trailers in since getting the tractor 2 years ago.
I was given several old electric poles when they were changed out buy the local power co. last year. I have been picking up tin roofing and siding at barge prices. This summer I decided to start clearing the location for the building. (no pictures) Yesterday I started building. I will start a new thread on the project later today.

First set of poles up. The uprights are 20' apart. The next set will be 10' to the right. The building will be open on the south facing side with 5, 10' wide parking areas.

I started my annual TSI project which usually involves Fir (Balsam). There is a section of S/P/F with a little hardwood mixed in but mostly Fir. They are bigger trees, at least compared to other fir in my woodlot here in the NE. They are recently dead or dying and many are misshapen. I want to cut the fir before the increased light from dead trees encourages regen. I don't want old dead Fir to blow down on new growth later. I will consider any logs I can get for stud wood as a bonus.

Since it is a new project I brought my camera. Heading down to the work site there was a blowdown across a fork in the trail.

I took care of that with the grapple. Then as I continued down and saw a partridge giving me the evil eye as I drove past.

At the work site the first tree was about 2' at the butt and dead. It also had a serious case of butt rot so using a wedge to steer it seemed a bad option. But there was an opening with just one small maple branch across it that I thought I could drop the tree through.

Of course it hung up on that little branch.

I had to work harder than you might think to get it down and finally reverted to the winch.

The butt was totally rotted and there was a seam and weevil crook up 12'.

Even with that I got a 40' log out of it. I cut a cookie and cut that into a block just to ensure myself that there was solid wood in that rotten tree.

Mowing season is over so parked the L3902 for the season. Gave it a grease and put on the Noco battery tender. Topped up the fuel and probably won't use it again until spring. Went to the Kubota dealer afterwards to pick up a sprayer that finally got in. While there I looked at 4 new MX5400 that just arrived. 2 were cabbed, HST and gear jammer, and 2 were open station, HST and gear jammer. Took every ounce of maturity I could muster not to ask the trade in value of the 3902. They sure were nice.

Picture on the sprayer box has the same side by side I'll be using it on. Can't beat Can Am's for both work and play.

And so it begins. The only reason to get an MX5400 rather than MX6000 is if you want a gear drive. If it has to be an HST, get the MX6000 with or without a cab and never look back. I would hate to part ways with mine, and it feels good knowing that I have no desire to.

There are a lot of places a roll from the chocker/cable wrap will help you. Especially around stumps. For example if I just pulled straight on this heavy it won't want to slide by the stump. It might get stuck or it might go over with a hard hard pull.

But if you make it roll it will climb right over the stump like it wasn't there and make life a whole lot easier.

Or if you have a tree behind the stump and root flare like this and want to pull from the camera.

Put your choker on so you have a couple wraps that will roll the log counter clockwise when you start to pull and it meets resistance. Give it a try to get a feel. It works well.

If you are talking about underneath, I used one of those "plastic" air conditioner pads that look like concrete. I did not want anything that would sweat or rot.

It is one of the board on the skid that the tank it bolted to.

Start of the day at the two houses at the end of the road. About 60% of the leaves are down. Rain forecast Thursday so time to clear gutters and get up some leaves. Too many on the ground to let them get soaked. Tenant works from home but was out of town so it was a good time to make some noise.

Cleared the gutters and immediately beside houses with leaf blower. Mulched/blew with the T-2290. When the piles started straining the T, pulled them into a bigger pile with the pine straw rake on the L. When that pile got really big, grappled it off to the woods.

Not sure how it makes sense a grapple with gaps about 4” between the tines can pick up leaves securely but it works.

All done! At least until about 90% of the leaves are down. Some of the oaks won’t be 100% clear until spring so 90% is the last clearing for the year.

Moved everything 100 yards up the road to our house. Cleared the gutters but didn’t get far before had to meet up with wife for a trip to town. Hopefully will finish our place tomorrow. It’s more SF, but not as cut up so it doesn’t take near as long.

Thanks - TSI means Timber Stand Improvement. The improvement can be what ever you deem to be better than what you have.

I use that wrap method sometimes if I have a tree that gets hung up. Sometimes it only takes a part of a turn to get it away from the point holding it in the top and then it will slide down the side of the holding tree. Obviously it needs to be free of the stump to work.

Not what I did but what I saw the other day at the local landfill. Notice the bolt on grapple. I was dropping household rubbish off at the green bins and spotted something orange helping out at the scrap metal pile.

I took the tranfer tank in town and put 50 gallons in it. I wish I had noticed that one of the boards on the home made skid was starting to rot.

My 100g diesel tank is fully empty after last weekend. I sucked the last bit that would come out into a jug for the burn pit. We are quite rural but there is a distributor in a town 1 hour away that sells dyed if you have a bulk tank. It's certainly better than paying pump prices for road fuel. And diesel keeps pretty good too as long as you maintain the equipment and depending on how much you use it can pay off the tank and pump in faster than you think.

If there's any problem is getting the 100g tank out of the pickup and set. No, no one is gonna deliver here except for propane and even though they don't have a delivery charge the price per gallon is really fluid, excuse the pun. Bottom line is a bulk tank, even over two years, is worth considering. If you can remove and place it. The toy tractor won't do that.

It's easy and fast to switch the front hydraulic snow blade for the pallet forks, so this afternoon in preparation for an oil and filter change I decided to warm up the engine by moving the Del Morino flail to its winter resting place.

After that I changed the oil and filter and the transmission filter on the MX.

Next up this afternoon was finally getting around to repairing part of the SB1574 snow blower. The previous owner used the blower for some commercial work so it came with a number of issues. The photos don't really show how bent and deformed that section of steel is. I cut out the damaged section and made up a template for some new steel. I'll cut out a piece of steel tomorrow, weld it in and paint it Kubota orange.

For anyone wondering why I didn't just replace the entire triangular piece of steel, it's welded on the back side to the drum and most of it is in great shape, so cutting out just the bad stuff made more sense.

I like the setup! Th grapple looks handy. Having a forest like that on your property must smell incredible in the fall! Nothing like it.

Getting ready for winter. Tucked away the summer stuff and have the snow blower handy to install.

I finished up the snow blower repair this morning. There's one more part that was damaged by the previous owner but I need an oxyacetylene setup to heat and hammer the steel back into shape. I don't think it's critical to function so it can wait.

I got a piece of sheet metal cut, welded in and painted and this should be good to go for the season.

You can see the damage to the end of the support, but like I said, it's not critical to function, just aesthetically challenging.

I'd forgotten how mangled the triangular piece of sheet metal was but these Craigslist photos show a significant "bubble". I must have hammered it back to some form of decent shape before I started using it. The bottom photo was taken the day I got it home and the damage is obvious. I think the previous owner sucked up a big rock or similar.
