Take a propane torch and "roast" the wood a bit then apply some amber or light colored Minwax stain/sealer. Your wife will be amazed by your creativeness and sensitivity. You can then leverage this to your benefit in ways only you can imagine. I was an art major for a while. Still paying dividends. Good luck. Have fun.
