curious, grabbed the MX6000 front axle shaft drawing and can see 2 possible reasons.

1)Looking at it ,my gut says maybe the balls have pooped out, 'somehow' ? I'm assuming this is the 'sliding' gear that transmits power to the front axle,if so,if the gear went past the 2 balls and spring, spring pushes balls out and 'locks' the gear into 4wd. Hard to believe gear could move that far though..

2) The other possibility is that the fork fingers 'magically' came out of the groove on the rear of the sliding gear #060. Say the rear lip broke off, gear could be pushed forward but NOT pulled back.

Now I've never had one apart, don't have xray eyes but it could explain the 'locked in 4wd'

If it was possible, inserting a borescope camera would be real nice. Get EYES inside BEFORE tearing the tractor down into 100s of pieces and costing $1,000s to fix.

I'm thinking #2 is the front runner

it will be interesting to hear what the dealer finds....

I just called the dealer and they came when I wasn't available and the mechanic was able to get it out, not sure what he did different than what I was doing but maybe putting allot more pressure on the handle. If it was going to break I wanted them to do it not me. I just went out and tried it and it came right out with no problem at all. I will keep putting it and out of 4wd now for sure. Thanks for all the reply's.

WHEW..... NICE.... sure better than tearing it apart !!
I'd be asking WHAT did the guy do !!!
Since these are straight cut gears, best to engage/disengage at a dead stop, neutral ( nothing spinning ) ? Maybe a slight rocking fwd/rev to relieve 'windup tension'

Nope. Room temperature RV antifreeze in a pump sprayer.
There was so much wet snow packed under the tractor everything turned to a block of ice overnight. The lever was literally blocked by ice.

Glad it worked. Like I said earlier, the 4wd control on my New Holland is stiff to actuate. I learned that if I push/pull on it sharply, it actuates in or out of 4wd.

well they are look like straight cut gears, so need to mesh nicely could involve rotating the driveshaft a wee bit

I have been taking it out after each use and it goes back in very easy ,not so easy coming out, but it does come out okay now. I am sure over time it will disengage easier.
