Rubber deflector on Woods RCC42

I just bought a slightly used RCC42 42" rotary cutter that I plan on using in the wooded parts of my property with my Bx. Cleaned everything up and replaced the oil in the gear box. The rubber deflector on the front end of the unit was pretty worn so I replaced it.

I used the mower for about 2 hours this past Saturday. It does a great job and is small enough to back in between trees. When I was finished, I noticed the rubber deflector was already worn by at least 1" in the center. I WAS going over a lot of saplings, and I'm sure some were larger than 1".

Do the deflectors need to be replaced every few hours (they are cheap), or should I just keep using it as it is? I may invest in chains, but for now, I'll prob just stay with the rubber. Am I doing something wrong, or is this natural for these cutters?

That is natural for rubber.I used to replace mine every year. The chains cost more because they last longer.

My first Landpride had the rubber and I too was replacing it yearly. My new one (last year) Landpride bat wing has chains. Look like new. Chains initially cost more but longevity is 20 times the rubber.

Yeah. I’m just surprised it wore as much as it did after only two hours of use.

Make you own up out of some baler belting. Get some from a local farmer who upgraded his belts, or you can buy new at any farm supply store.

That stuff also make for good striping on a yard with a finish mower.

Never did that, don't want to. Bad enough mowing the grass as it is.

Flip, it takes no more time. Just make your yard look like you have some pride in it. And it let's your neighbors know you're alive and well and still care to be on a machine that's not in a hospital!!

I have a friend who lives in town by himself, never goes outside to even shovel the snow this winter. Went to the store about every two weeks for some groceries. His neighbors come over and see if he answers the door, just make sure odors are not building up inside! When he told me that, I suggested he get out more....just evidence of life.

I have old bailer belts in the barn, might cut one and give it a try anyway. Been thinking about adding one to the top of the county plow anyaway as a deflector.
