I’m looking for a rotary cutter for my B2650. My dealer has a LP for $1900 and a woods for $2900. I’m looking around for a nice used one. The fear I have with a used one is how do I know if the drive shaft is too long? Thanks in advance for any help. I’m a rookie when it comes to tractors

You cannot without mounting the mower and testing.

It is not uncommon to find that one must shorten the PTO shaft upon installing a new cutter.

Easily done with a hack saw.

How would I know if it’s too long and needs to be shortened

Mount the cutter to your 3PH.
Adjust (shorten) the top link to raise the tail of the cutter.
Now, at various heights on the 3PH (highest, lowest, middle), hold the drive shaft coupler up to your PTO shaft. If it's short enough to slide on in all positions, the shaft is not too long.
