Good Evening Everyone! I just stumbled across an auction for a '16 MX5200HST that has a post which reads:
Note: Engine will not crank. Blown engine. Has hydrostat transmission. Unknown diagnostics.
If it truly has a blown engine, is it worth rebuilding? Also, what would be the maximum bid given the possible repairs ahead. The hours were not provided in the post, so I asked the seller to provide them, in order to help with the decision making process.

I appreciate any input, thanks.

you will get lots of opinions.

Mine is if you need to get help getting it running.

- a running one in good condition ($25k) depending on hrs, condition, impliments etc.... so just a guess.
- to get the engine rebuilt $10k depending on whats wrong, condition of block, etcc.... lots to guess on here.
- so $15k of value after rebuild and pay 50% of this cause who knows what types of problems / aggrevation / problems will pop up so 50% of $15k

bid up to $7k and hope for the best and have some wiggle room assuming of course you thrive on projects and not worried about the unknown.

my 2 cents.

do some homework, get price for a 'crate' engine(drop in 100% complete) from a supplier. Be SURE it;s the SAME model number though ! Now will YOU be doing the repair? If so YOUR labour is free, otherwise call dealer ask what they'd charge.

Odds are it'll go for 80-120% of true value for a running tractor..as auctions are 'funny'.
to me a nonrunner is worth 10% about scrap value, here that's 10 cents a pound so what does tractor weight? a 5000# non running tractor amounts to 500 in scrap, say $550. Am I lowballing it. sure it's a NON RUNNER ! 1st engine is toast, history, a moneypit. 2nd NOTHING can be tested..rad,tranny, HST, brakes, etc. LOTS of that could be damaged as well. Oh yeah wiring.....mice LOVE wires... you could have $3K in harnesses to get

also what are the buyers fees, handling charges, taxes, etc. Thosed can ad 30% to your buying bid !
not trying to 'kill the deal' buy this is a BUYER BEWARE deal !!!!

the engine is about, what, $21,000 complete now?

Is it worth it? That's up to you.

Can you rebuild it? That's up to you, and dependent on the extent of the damage to the engine.

parts to rebuild them can get pricey depending on what it needs

I generally don't buy them with "blown engines" unless I can inspect in person. Auction inspections are usually pretty vague and that's done on purpose.

I’m a facility manager at a technical college that has a good diesel program. I’m confident of our resources, but I also understand parts are pricey, and there may be unforeseen issues, once we tear into it. Thanks!
