For deer resistance, I found that Skip Laurels are a great choice and they handle shade well. You might also consider adding some flowering plants that deer usually avoid, like Bleeding Hearts or Astilbes.

Thanks for reviving this VERY old thread. We moved last year and I have been doing a fair amount of planting. Got to read through everything again - some great ideas here for the new place!
