Hi group - I've updated an old thread on TBN about my L48 and its HST. It's a great machine but is slower in reverse than forward. The original thread appeared on TBN so the present repair job is posted there as well. Thread on current repair job here.

The HST issue is the swash plate cradle bearings. More info in the TBN thread.

That appears to be a very clean GM product in the background.

Current job thread (link above) has new pics of the damaged HST internals, possible causes and what was replaced. Notes added & pics on reassembly with new front driveshaft bearings.

We have not experienced but TWO hst failures on L and M series. One BX, no B's.

In 100% of those cases nary a single one of them had Kubota filters on them, nor were they using UDT or super UDT. Can I say for certainty that the lack of OE filters/fluids caused the failure? No, I can't. Perhaps it was a function of the owner being cheap and perhaps it could've been due to ignorance and neglect. Most of the time we (at the shop) never get the whole story, thus we just repair what was wrong and do our best to educate people, but even that's hard when you never get the whole story.

True - the prior owner of this L48 said his Kub dealer did the oil service - so off-brand fluid/filter is not suspected - but we don't know what we don't know.
