Well this is an impressive amount of technical information. I certainly came to the right place for help. From the info you've all provided, it seems there might be some less expensive explanations for the clank (expensive one being the transmission). The seller said someone is come this morning with cash and a trailer. We shall see. If that doesn't happen, I'll offer him 7K. I'm kind of intrigued myself as to the issue after reading this thread. If I end up with it, and figure out the issue, whoever was right wins a prize!! :)

Oh Lord.... Deja Vue.... My buddy's Case 245 has the SAME clunk sound! We thought it was in the clutch/pressure plate area also.
He's had the tractor for a few years and it's done it for as long as I can remember. The clutch was on it's last legs since the day he brought it home... so we assumed it had to be the clutch.
Last spring the clutch finally gave up the ghost and he had a clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw out bearing and the shifting forks professionally replaced.
Well.... the clunk-clunk is still there. Push the new clutch and the clunk goes away.
I'd pretty much say the clunk is in the tranny. The dealer said to run it till something develops, gets worse or just flat out quits.

I am going to watch this thread sooooo...... keep us informed.
Inquiring minds want to know....

length of fence wire wrapped around the PTO shaft might make the 'clunk' though I suspect it's 'internal'....and $$$$

make a nice 'winter project' though

When I first heard the thumping I though it sounded like a windshield wiper hitting too low. Then I looked and he had no cab! :)
