I have a dream - no leaks on my 1996 B2400 tractor, serial no. 72874 tractor. I have owned this tractor since 2003. I have over the years had several small leaks which I didn't take care of. All are fairly minor but are starting to bug me. My goal is to have zero leaks.

1. There is a hydraulic leak from right side bolt (3 bolts across) under the mid pto. All 3 bolts appear partially stripped/damages and there may be related seal under each bolt. See pic below. I would like to replace all 3. I have followed many threads before in this forum and usually someone says look at the parts diagram on Messicks. I have tried but am not smart enough to locate these bolts.

2. Directly to the right of the mid pto is a round ~1 1/2" hole and, next to it, what looks like a bolt hole. See Pic. While this does not appear to be leaking -it does look like something might be missing here and in need of replacement. Again I looked through the parts diagrams but could not locate it.

3. The third leak appears to be the drive from the engine to the rear wheels. Again I could not identify it in the parts diagrams. I have read various posts which suggest that it may be related to the steering system - is this correct?

I have gone around the tractor and tighten various loose bolts which has helped. I believe there are additional issues but this is where I want to start.

Thank you for your help.

You need to back up from the tractor and take a picture of where those are on the tractor. I have no idea where to look from the pictures you posted

1: Zoom out, I think your looking at the bottom of the HST, but not 100%
2: Nothing goes in there, it was just an optional casting that goes to nowhere.
3: looks like the boot on the propeller shaft for the $WD needs replaced.

1- I will take better pictures tomorrow.
2- Good news.
3- Is the attached Messicks part (I think you can open this) the "boot" you reference? The front shaft cover also looks a little beat up. Is the boot a likely cause of a leak and is it difficult to replace?

Thank you.

The 3 bolts are plugs on the hydrostat and yes there are orings there. Just remove and replace orings. The hole dont worry about nothing there. As far as the shaft leak yes it could be steering gearbox leaking. There is also a vent on top of the clutch housing. The boots are just dust covers essentially. Shouldn't be any oil in them. If so and not coming from above then could be your front axle

Since the heads are messed up get new plugs and O-rings:

Thank you North Idaho Wolfman and Mountainman. I appreciate your help. Ordering the parts today - will begin studying the steering gearbox, clutch housing and other possible causes of this leak. You guys are generous.

on stuff like that you sure want to pull the fenders and floors off and inspect everything above VERY well. The main source of leaks is often (but not always) above or in front of where you see oil. Then gravity and airflow (from the fan, and traveling forwards) take over, blows and drips and runs down onto something that looks like it in itself may be leaking.

I have never seen those 3 plugs leak. Usually it's the tubes above and beside the transmission, but I haven't seen them all either. Those tubes might also account for oil on the propeller shaft boot as well. Had one with a leaking HST input shaft seal, those are fun. That whole tractor is a little bit hard to diagnose leaks on because half of the transmission is up inside of the "frame" (big square tube that holds the transmission in the rear and the bellhousing in the front). The gearcase aka bellhousing can and does leak from time to time. Then there are a few tubes and pipes inside of the frame that can leak too. Lots of leak points on these things. So with all that said I'd be real cautious about ordering parts until you know for sure where the source of the leak is. I use UV dye, added to the transmission fluid. Then go wash everything off VERY well, let it dry, run the poo out of the tractor for a little bit, and then use the UV glasses and UV light to find the source of the leak.

Thank you for your response. The only leak locations I know for sure are those 3 bolts, leak on the boot on the propeller shaft and the FEL controller (which I fixed). We have had real bad ice storms here resulting in lots of tractor work. If I am going to reach my goal of 0 leaks I think you are right - " fenders and floors off ".
