On my first M series, a 2008 open station syncro shuttle 5040 which I now replace with a 2012 closed cab hyd shuttle M6040 tractor when started, after about a second or two, a squeak or sometimes a 2-3 second squeal emanates from (what sounds like) under the tractor.
The M5040 was more of a consistent sharp squeak, the M6040 sometime seems to squeal (forever) about 2-3 maybe 4 seconds.
It sounds like when using a hydraulic outlet and you deadhead a cylinder and the relief valve opens with a squeal.
Is this normal? Anything to worry about.

Everything works normally.

Sure it's not the fan belt? Have you checked the tension lately? Should be about 1" of deflection measured mid way between the sheaves.

My '11 M7040 doesn't squeal when/after starting. By chance does your tractor's 3 pt hitch leak down while sitting idle?

Fan belt is properly adjusted (300 hr tractor, still at factory adj).

3pt does not leak down on either, makes the hydraulic squeal even with no attachment on the hitch (hitch does not rise at all when started), loader in float or hold, hyd clutch depressed or released, shifted into fwd/rev shuttle gear or in neutral.

I'd say you need to have your dealer pay you a service call and let the tech hear it.

None of us have an issue like that. Let them diagnose it.

I was hoping not to have to make a donation to the dealer. I find it interesting that I have/had two MXX40 series tractors (one bought new, one w/300 hrs) with the opposite transmissions, but make the identical noise.

Since it sounds like a relief valve, I don't think it can be too bad as that is what they are made to do. Probably just wait until it gets worse or someone else can enlighten me on what its all about. Thanks for your responses

A squealing relief valve is not a good thing to ignore. Can lead to very expensive repairs. A relief valve shouldn’t make noise that you hear.

Is your 3pt lever all the way up? My M6800 will squeal if the lever is all the way up--I have it set not to go to the top. Good luck

Might get a pressure gauge and connect to the quick connect and actually see if the pressure spikes at the sound of the squeal. Maybe it's actually something else.

The noise happens even if the 3pt hitch control is all the way down. The lift arms don't jump or move at all when started, so it seems not to be seeing a pressure spike.

What quick connect is available to check pressure? With all open center valves, I would think it should be close to zero. Thats what gets me, how can it build up any pressure, never mind exceeding a relief.
