“Nobody hunts with an AR15. It’s just wrong, it’s like hunting with a poodle”
Yet, here we are filling the freezer.

MHO a 5.56 is a tad on the light side for deer, but bullet placement is critical no matter what you shoot, an AR10 7.62 would be a better choice. And as far as the poodle thing, the kid has 3 standard poodles that would drag down an elk if she told them too,, so yeah over all ya done good ! :)

The little dog only weighs ten pounds, but she has the heart of a lion.

Awesome, 556 62g it is!
While I would not hesitate to shoot a deer with a 5.56/.223, I’m using a 450 BushMaster Great Lakes upper on a Springfield Armory Saint Edge lower. The trigger is unbelievably crisp.

I have tagged two does this year and hoping for a third tonight or tomorrow.

The 3PH carryall on the Kubota is much better for bringing home the harvest, but it was dark and cold. She slid along the snow just fine.

These 2 bucks have been hanging around every day since the rut. During the rut the 7 pointer put a licking on the 8 pointer. In the second video there is a lump on his left shoulder. I have seen him run, paw at the ground with the left leg, and jump the fence so I am sure it is not broken. Not sure what the bulge is all about, dislocation maybe? Any thoughts?

It could be filled with green puss due to an infection from dirt entering
an open wound.

I've thought of that and it is possible but I have seen him on camera everyday since October and there has been no visible wound which is why I am puzzled on this. Will be interesting to see what happens as time unfolds. Having 7 cameras out helps keeping an eye on him.

I think a puncture wound from an antler tip might be hard to see.
Keep us posted. It will take time for it to heal or get worse and spread
the infection, if in fact that is the case. It does look severe though to me.

Last Thursday I witnessed a 8pt buck trying to breed a doe.

Not very graceful!

The 'short bus' deer. The runt of the group. In folklore, he's Rudolph. The autistic deer.

The loner that runs into the semi truck while the others stand and stare on the side of the road... and he or she lives.

The one who runs full on into the side of an operating combine in the field... and lives.

The one that stands still on your porch when you walk out the door. Eats from your hand some days for years. Until a hunter gets him/her.

Dumb as a post and loving life for all it has to offer. LOL I resemble that. LOL

Lice or mange?

I'm just guessing, but I don't think either.

Wondering an injury and licked it clean? Seems localized in that one spot?

PS - - looked at video couple more times. Maybe some more hair loss on ribs, behind front shoulder?

Might be lice, I think that can be spotty like that(?). Wildlife Biology classes were a LONG time ago....

I don't think mange looks like that in deer, but not certain.

Certainly isn't the normal molt they go through this time of year shedding winter hair. I think your assessment of lice is correct.

You're in BC and I'm in New York State, so we're about as far apart as possible.........

I mean that literally and not politically.... ;)

I've seen some deer with injury damage that looked like that, but after further thought it could be lice. Glad you concur. I was guessing quite a bit.

If I recall correctly, they can likely overcome the lice problems once the weather gets better and they get stronger with better feed, etc.?

PS - - I did some quick Google research, and the deer lice that cause that condition are not known to transfer to human hosts.

PPS - - found this from Oregon. Black-tailed deer and White-tailed deer. Again, lice-related. fastfacts_FF_010104_deerhairloss.pmd

Interesting read. Thank you very much. We aren't that far apart...

Oh yesssss, on two accounts. First being shooter closest to cam and second being enjoyable to watch. So enjoyable to watch I very well might have sat there taking it in and not notice until too late the shooter had walked away. 😂
