Hi folks ... my BX23S just went past 200 hours, so it's time to change the hydraulic filter. I'm wondering how much fluid loss I should expect and what I can do to limit it. I have a small quantity of UDT2 on hand.

Someone mentioned parking the tractor on an incline ... that seems easy ... I suppose I could also use the FEL to push down on something (maybe put some jack stands under the frame just in case).

I also saw mention of using a vacuum cleaner but it wasn't specifically for a BX ... is this something I should look into?

Thanks!

I used the shop vac trick. Worked great on my mx5400.
My son-in-law held it over the fill opening while I changed the filters.

Thanks! For some dumb-ass reason, I was thinking you had to put the vacuum over the screen filter opening ... I forgot about the fill opening. That seems quite straight-forward.

can someone educate me.... I know I am really old school / old school..... and maybe not too book smart....

we would simply clean the area well and catch / reuse any fluid in a clean pan and reuse.

Clean and non contaminated back into use?

am I missing something on this recurring topic?

Don't take this as gospel. I usually change fluid and filter on my BX.

If I recall correctly, when just changing filter, I only lost the contents of the filter and maybe a cup or so.....maybe 2 quarts total.

Left the fill plug in and had the new filter ready to go....

If you open the screen filter up, everything will dump.

Thanks, this is helpful. I hadn't planned on completely changing out the fluid ... I replaced it at 50 hours, and the book doesn't call for changing at 200 hours. But at a minimum I will plan on buying some more UDT2 when I get the filter so I can replace what's lost.

Changed mine about a week ago. Lost contents of the filter, and maybe half a pint more.

Most of what I lost ran down my arm and dripped off my elbow.

This is getting better and better! I think I'll tilt the tractor and just work quickly. I can't remember if you can even change the filter with OEM guard plate installed, but I have a detachable after-market guard, so I'll have good access.

I think IF you are prepared and have the new filter handy ONCE under the machine - the amount of fluid you lose will be a red solo cup - hell you will get more ON YOU than the ground!!!!!

never reuse reclaimed fluids no matter how clean you think it is it doesnt take much trying to save 63cents to cost you several thousand in repairs.

I'm in the other camp, it is perfectly reasonable to reuse that oil providing it got dumped into a clean container. It's going back into the same machine it was just in, 10 minutes ago.
Maybe run it through a filter,if you feel inclined to do so, but there's nothing wrong with the oil.

IDK - two very good questions. Maybe free oil changes for life?
I'd say bent frame = "TOTALED" so it wouldn't matter how they put it down.

that frame folding was a very common problem with Toyotas in the lates 90's. Frame rust. Cost Toyota tonnes on cash as they provided new frames to some and complete vehicle buyback to other, etc..

Something like 1 1/2 million trucks got recalled and cost them $5 billion!!!

The HST filter on the BX series tractors is pressure-fed. Like others have told you, you will only lose less than a quart of fluid.
Tipping the tractor, facing it uphill, and using a vacuum cleaner will make no difference.

Fantastic! As I said previously, this is getting better and better, and you just made it better.
