Help with a 5000 Ford air cleaner

Has anyone rebuilt a Ford 5000 oil bath air cleaner or replaced it with a dry element type air cleaner?

I have my grandfathers 5000 Ford. The oil bath air filter was in real bad shape. I tried cleaning with hot water and soaking in various solvents but couldn’t get the seed hulls out of the steel mesh. I carefully drilled out the spot welds and disassembled the air cleaner and removed the steel mesh but it fell apart when I tried to clean it. I can obtain new steel mesh material. I’m seeking advice from someone who has experience rebuilding this type of air cleaner.

I've never had one apart to that degree, and have no clue what may or may not be available in the way of parts/materials to put one back together.

I see plenty of replacement units (can't speak to quality) available for under $100 from multiple sources.

Converting to dry element filter will be a custom project any way you go about it. The factory dry filter can mounts horizontally and has an opening in the side of the radiator shell for access. I don't think it was an option on the 5000, but was on the 5600 and later tractors. If you really feel the need to go with a dry type, I would suggest you test your fabricating skills and not try to duplicate O.E.M. A lot of those parts will be unavailable and/or require custom work anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought one of the replacement assemblies made overseas and decided not to use it because of poor quality construction.

I also looked at Donaldson and Fleetguard filter assemblies and after calculating the required size for the 5000 I cannot come up with a size and configuration that will allow placement in the space where the OEM filter was.

These considerations resulted in my decision to rebuild the original filter. I wondered if anyone else had done the same.

I have not rebuilt one, but I have one on a '66, 730 Case. I don't use it for field work so it doesn't need cleaned as often as suggested on the label, but they are very effective. They are still used in some equipment today. Was replaced because the canister filters became popular and MUCH easier to change.

What specific questions do you have? If there is something needed replaced/rebuilt I'd think it wouldn't be too much of a challenge. If a lot of the original is destroyed perhaps you can get one at a salvage yard read to bolt on.

When I removed the steel mesh it fell apart. I can get replacement steel mesh but I wonder how tight it needs to be wound and packed back into the canister to provide proper filtration. I know I’m overthinking this but if I make a reasonable attempt to do this right it’ll be better than the reproduction that I ordered and received. I think all of the reproduction air filters are made at the same place and I’m not impressed with the one I got.

The mesh keeps the big stuff out. Here's a place to buy the mesh. Needs to fill the space, but not jam packed in there.
