My wife's Subaru was the same way.

It was actually faster for me to remove the bumper, then remove the headlight assembly to change the bulbs than it is to do it the "recommended way".

KCKNDRGN..........I excerpted your post because after reading it, I failed to understand how the work you put into the replacement of the bulbs was easier than removing the front inner fender liner of the affected side as is the most common practice, at least with the Subaru Ourtback. It takes about 10 minutes to remove the dozen or so push-pin fasteners and remove the wheelhouse panel (even with leaving the wheel on). You then have a straight shot at the rear access cap of the headlamp module to get the bulb out from within it. The dealerships normally want about $100 for the same work done by them. The design has since been changed, incidentally.
