Going to install a red dot sight on my Sig P226. But it comes with some challenges, mostly with the milled pocket for lightening the slide weight (pic 2, vertical arrow) just happens to be right where one of the screws for the sight has to go. So my plan is to make an insert out of aluminum to fill the pocket(pic 3 and 4) so it will press into the slot. I added a little red loctite to secure it for the milling and tapping operation to follow. The plan is to mill down just far enough so the insert is exposed but not so far to allow it to pull out. Once drilled and tapped, the sight screw will hold it in place. More to come tomorrow.

& you either have good skills at it or you are not worried about messing up a SIG!!
SIGs are pretty pricey... so its not for the weak of heart.
i do not like to mill on SIGs for people. tooo much risk with just a slip.
will enjoy this thread knowing that you are taking the risk!

Looks like an excellent plan, looking forward to more pics.
My first machining instructor used to say the best way to gain skills was to work on irreplaceable pieces. Makes you think everything thru, plan well, & rehearse your moves until you can't screw up. Slow, but speed will come later. He was a wise man.

The first pic is showing the milling of the slight dovetail that is built into the sight. I wanted the sight to slide in without force because there has been some broken glass issues on some earlier models. I got it to .005" play back and forth and felt comfortable with that. Time will tell, but these things are fairly new and there is not a lot of info out there that I can find on installations. The second pick is the finished product including trying some stainless blackener. I didn't take any pictures of drilling or tapping because I didn't want to break my concentration at this critical stage (See post #2 by Bill). Pic three is the sight installed and you can kind of see the slight dovetail on the sight. The last two pictures are my attempt to show the red dot co-witnessing with the taller suppressor sights that I added earlier.

Hey Yooper. Got the shop pretty much where I want it. I just got done completely redoing a brush hog. Will post some pics soon.

we manufacture custom firearms conversions, machine guns & suppressors..
But this thread is about You & doing a trick install.
Appreciate you being willing to work on a SIG & sharing your approach.
Its a high risk/low reward to do this for a customer.
Love my Sig P226 Extreme. If I was to mill it, I'd look at buying a slide to mill, and not touch the original. It is a tack driver with the sights on it
