Got half inch of rain yesterday.
Started moving my commercial shelving and 1 work table over to my shop. I also picked up the smoker and relocated it closer to the shop as well. Looked like it wanted to rain all throughout the day, didn't get a drop. The temperature and breeze today was nice.

While back there was some discussion on beef market, etc. on this thread.

Don’t know if it was a current episode, but just heard on RFDTV’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen that beef animal counts are at 60-year lows.

Was aware numbers were low, but didn’t realize that low.

They did say that could be an opportunity for expansion.

Yes, almost everyone around me is running minimal heards just to meet the county tax requirement/ag exemption, the drought has been hurting everyone. Small operations that dont produce their own hay are not making money.

Absolutely. Can’t imagine trying to manage with what you’re dealing with. Your pictures speak well to some of the challenges.

Just realized my neighbor is no longer milking. Looks like all the stock are gone. That’s not a drought problem but more a problem with our dysfunctional federal milk pricing system…….

He must have ceased shipping milk very recently as I saw him go by just the other day with the manure spreader.

Guessing he was milking 75-100 or so. About same size as the dairy we had when I was a kid. Hate to see that happen.

She looks like she prefers something green rather than what's in the hay ring.
I had moved some old hay off the newly acquired property and put that fresh bale out almost 2 weeks ago. And then it started to rain about 3 days later(last week in August 1.3in). Monday evening to Tuesday morning, 1.2in measured yesterday. Hopefully more to come today.

I need to install some gates and water troughs on the 2 new pastures. The prior owner just cut holes in the fences and was using cattle panel wired shut to the fence. Not ideal at all.

All the materials were left by previous owner, to include the cedar post in the ground already. I think, this is how big the back or side yard is going to be!

No longer have to leash the dogs for potty breaks. The cows can help mow around the house and the rest of the 68 acres, lol. I just hope the cows don't leave presents on the front porch.

80% rain chance today from the hurricane, less than 10% for the remainder of the week. So hopefully today we will get a good soakin.

Those saw blades work great. I have 1 on my Shindiawa Redstick & use it frequently. They work very well on rattlesnakes. Ask me how I know.
You probably have more rattlesnakes than I do. The hogs down here have pretty much wiped them out per the life long locals. I have only encountered one since I bought this place in 2020.

I have encountered 5-6 since 2001. Not a great amount, but enough to keep you vigilant. I was removing some brush with the Redstick when a Prairie rattler struck at the blade. I didn’t know he was there. He was cut in 2 & half of the snake was pitched into my leg. Luckily, it was not the business end. That did get my heart rate up. 😳

I’ll take the snakes, over the hogs.

I planted my wildlife plots 2 weeks ago. We have not had any measurable rain since then. The moisture from some of the vegetation I disked in was enough to get some germination. I would really like a good soaker. The last couple rain events in the area were not forecasted, & missed completely. As you know, this is the component of farming we have no control over.

On the bright side, I’m going to get some fish today, to stock in 1 of my ponds.🎣

A few clouds looked promising, but no rain as of yet. Fingers crossed still.

Picked up a concrete 190gal water trough for the front pasture and 3 of the 8ft long, 8in diameter cedar posts for some gate posts.

A storm that was fairly close 2 days ago and the size of many states and yet not a drop received. Feast/Flood or Famin/Drought when it comes to these weather events.

Atleast it feels like Fall has already arrived.
