Yup, at least on mine they do. I clean them a couple times a season when I sharpen the blades so they don't get quite that pack up. Depends on how much you have to mow and what type of grass / terrain you have. Make sure you clean the radiator and screen if you have one also. I blow them out every time I mow, helps prevent overheating.

Hello Everyone,
It seems my dust covers for the mower spindles get filled with dust and grass. Is this normal?
Looks like you are over greasing a bit and the spindle vents to the dust cover, filling it. Then grass sticks to it. Otherwise completely normal.

Yep, normal.

Different cover, but I took the pulley covers off my mower years ago.

We don't have any youngsters around, so figured it was okay to do.

Every time I mow, I rinse the whole machine after using my blower on it. And yes, I remove the spindle covers and blow the deck off too. Then I blow dry the machine after rinsing it off. My 3 year old Z422 still looks new!

Same.

I try not to spray my mower deck off with a hose, although I do occasionally.

Just try to keep the seal areas dry.

I would caution anyone about using a pressure washer, unless they're very careful.
