Good evening everyone.

So I just received my steering controller back from the hydraulic shop. They did a complete rebuild on it due to a leak coming from the steering shaft seal.
Just to be clear, I'm talking about the steering unit located under the dash that the steering wheel attaches to.
When I removed the unit, some hydraulic oil naturally started coming out of the unit.
My question is, do i need to fill the unit with oil before I install and connect my hydraulic lines?
If so, whats the best way to do that.
Second question, does the hydraulic system self purge or is there a procedure to remove air from the system.

This is my first sub compact with hydraulic system. Not used to working on these. :)

Thanks guys,
Rick

No need to add any oil to the steering valve. Just reinstall it, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from full turn one way to full turn the other a few times as it is self bleeding. Shut the engine back off and top off your hydraulic oil level if needed. Now your ready to go play, err work.

Good evening everyone.
So I just installed the steering controller, started the tractor and I started to turn the steering wheel and the minute I start to turn the steering wheel, it starts to ERATICALLY turn from left to right really really fast. As it starts to turn, my front wheels are turning the opposite direction of the wheel direction if that makes sense.
Any ideas what could be the issue?
Has anyone ever replaced one on their tractor?
I'm puzzled.

Thanks

I'll have a guess that you have the valve rotated from the correct position, putting hoses in the wrong spot, or a couple swapped. Always the chance it wasn't repaired correctly, but check connections/placement first.
Ideally jack the front up to take the load off the steering ram when bleeding it if you can. YMMV

Before I removed controller, I marked all the lines and took pictures to be sure I didn't mix up line connections. So I'm fairly certain that that isn't the issue. Starting to think that maybe it wasn't rebuilt correctly. Just wanted to see if there were any other suggestions before I took it back.

Thanks

Maybe before you remove it and take it back, call the shop and explain your situation. Maybe they'll recognize what it is and maybe have you change a couple of hoses to fix it (even though you had them the same way as you removed them).

It sure sounds like they did not get it timed correctly when it was reassembled.

You have four things that could be going on.

Lines are not connected properly.
Unit is installed Improperly making the lines end up in the wrong locations.
Unit was rebuilt improperly, being that its listed as a non rebuild-able unit, I would tend to sway towards that.
Last possibility is you have a pressure issue on the feed to the control unit, maybe that's what caused the seal to go out?

I am 99% sure it can only be bolted in one position.

Update:

I took unit back to shop and explained to them what the issue was.
One of the service guys right away recognized it as a "timing" issue.
Looks like "whitetiger" nailed it.
Got it back, installed it and voila, it worked!

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions.

Is It reccomended to have these rebuilt or just drop the $500 to buy a new unit? I see someone stated they are not "rebuild-able". Also where did you go to get it rebuilt? Hydraulic shop?

Well for me to get one from the dealer, it was $900, so I just opted to get it rebuilt. And yes, I took it to a hydraulic shop for the rebuild.

Hi, What is the secret to removing the dash? I have the steering wheel, and two Phillips head bolts removed. The dash will only come up an inch or so. feels like something is holding it?
