B7100 PTO Shifter -- Won't Go Into 1st?

I've not yet had occasion to play with the PTO on my B7100, but while in the garage yesterday, tried shifting the PTO lever into first (speed 1) while clutching in.

No dice.

Clutching in and shifting forward, I can shift into 2nd, Neutral(again), and 3rd, but it feels as if there's something solid preventing me from shifting into first. I'm still one notch shy of the 1st

Any theories as to why this is, or what I can do to fix this? Didn't have occasion to fire it up and see if warming trans oil might help, but odd it's happy to let me shift through the rest of the selector range. It's not an urgent concern but as I'd eventually like to add some implements down the road and 1st is as close as I can get to 540 RPM...it's sorta important.

Thanks,

-Evan

Just to clarify, when you were trying to shift PTO gears using the clutch the tractor was not running?

If that is correct, start the tractor and (using the clutch) try it again. I don't think you have an issue if you were only trying it without running the tractor.

Evan, are you saying that your B7100 has two neutral positions on your shifter plate?

Maybe there is a difference depending on year of production. I believe my B7100 plate is setup as:

(front of tractor)
3rd gear
2nd gear
neutral
1st gear

Mine has neutrals between PTO speeds 2 and 3 as well. And yes, tractor wasn't running. I'll fire it up tomorrow (didn't have time today) and see what it does. Hope your suspicion is correct!

I have had that issue where gears were not perfectly lined up and could not move in to 1st when not running. Once I started it up (and using clutch) it dropped into 1st gear just fine.

Hope that is the case for you too.

Yea you need the tractor running to get all the gears to line up.

My 1980 B7100 has neutrals between each PTO speed position & sometimes it is a bit of a frig to get it into 1 with engine running & manipulating clutch, but it always goes in.
