The Kaufman 30ft gooseneck trailer that I ordered on March 10th is currently being painted and should be ready for pick up sometime next week. Looks like I need to pencil in a 3,000 mile roadtrip. If anyone needs anything hauled from Beaver City, NE out west then let me know. 😂

I'm planning on combining a work trip with picking up the trailer. The company pays $0.70/mile and they seem to be ok with that. Flights, car rental, airport parking and gas typically cost them $1,800 or so each trip, and I made it clear that I'm not looking to make money from this endeavor, just trying to offset the cost of picking up the trailer by rolling it into a work trip.

I am really looking forward to this trailer. I could have used it last weekend to be honest.

Out of curiosity, why are you picking it up so far away?

Kaufman has two locations for factory-direct pricing and pickup. One is in Beaver City, NE and the other is in Lexington, NC. Shipping to my location would be $1,350 but I would need to have equipment to unload a 7,000 lb trailer with a 30ft deck. No doubt arranging for the proper equipment or business to do that would add more cost.

I received confirmation from the CFO this afternoon that they'll give me $0.70/mile for the round-trip based on the shortest route in Google Maps. This amounts to $2,177 and change. So that's my break-even budget for fuel, accommodation and food for six days and a little over 3,000 miles. I can't imagine it costing that much, and I won't even need to use any vacation days for this trip. I'll put in a week of work before heading home via Kaufman's facility.

I love road-trips so this will feel like a vacation, and I get to pull a nice, new trailer home. 🙂

I gotcha. That males aense if it's not really gonna cost you anything I thought maybe there would have been a dealer closer. But if you are getting travel paid for why not.

I didn't look into Kaufman's dealer network and not even sure if they have one. Their appeal for many is the factory-direct pricing with reasonable delivery costs, and it was in my head from the beginning that I could combine a business trip with picking up a trailer to reduce my cost.

The local PJ trailer dealer where I've purchased three PJ and a MidSota trailer has a similar trailer to the Kaufman I've ordered but it's close to 50% more expensive and certainly not 50% better! Dealer markup, shipping, prep etc., all add to base price, not to mention the fact that PJ charges a premium based on their name, but their quality has suffered in the last 6 years or so.

Choosing a trailer is an interesting task. Their are many subtleties in how they're made, the GVWR, location of the axles, etc., and this is the most informed trailer purchase I've made. I don't see myself outgrowing this one. I will almost definitely make some upgrades though.

I reached out to Throttle Down Kustoms yesterday to ask about the front bumper that I ordered a couple of months ago. They're in Moore, MT which is around 325 miles from me, and I opted to pick up the bumper rather than pay $250 for shipping.

Moore, MT is basically on the way as I head back from Beaver City, NE through Sheridan, WY. The bumper will be ready next week, and although I wanted to have it installed prior to the trip out east, at least I can make a stop on the way home and roll that pickup into this little adventure.

The only downside to all of this is that I can't take my dog with me. She loves to ride in the trucks or Jeep and would have really enjoyed this trip. I will miss her for sure.
