30-06 versus 526

neighbor works at a steel store, brought me a piece of ar 400 steel plate for a target. Will it stand up to his 30-06?? Two shots and it is dented, don't think it will last. Brought my 556 bolt action out and surprise,, 2 shots and 2 holes. I expected the 556 to barely dent it. I used a soft point and a full metal jacket with the 556, both left holes, the soft point hole was bigger. Any explanation as to why the 556 bored a hole???

For those calibers, you should be using AR 550 steel. I use that steel, no holes.

AR 400 is better for smaller calibers (.22, )

speed kills.

I shoot a lot of steel targets and will only use AR500 steel, but you still need to be below around 2800 fps on 3/8" AR500. Otherwise, you will tear up the targets. AR400 isn't near as hard, so, you'll definitely be punching holes in it unless you back off to about 200 yards.

Higher velocity, which equals more energy and also less bullet surface area.
AR steel does not like fast rounds.
The 30-06 is 2700FPS
The 5.56 is 3250FPS

I have a Marlin 450 that will punch right through AR400, AR500 it will just leave a heck of a mark.
