All back together but I didn't like how temperamental the starting was. Turned my small lathe into a magneto test stand to confirm a good spark. Chased it down to the impulse pawls that I built up with weld to compensate for wear. Didn't grind them down enough where they catch the pin and it was affecting the timing. Now it starts in one revolution and purrs like a kitten with no leaks.

One thing of note is that the amp gauge does not show charge on the low setting, but when I click it to high and then back down it shows charge. Anybody with any ideas?

Is it the original switch or a replacement? Did you go rebuild the generator or is it as it was?

It is an original Farmall generator (Delco Remy) that I bought off eBay. It is a three brush generator that requires a cutout relay and the four position light switch. I replaced the bearings and checked the field coils and such for shorts. Brushes were like new. It will run like a motor when you hook up the field and armature direct. If there is an issue I suspect it would be in the cutout relay, but as long as it charges I will live with it. One more thing of note, I have dedicated ground wires for both the relay and the switch.

Maybe the high speed is required to get the generator excited, then it works at slower speed.
I believe you are on to something. I only had it running twice and maybe I just have to learn its ‘personality’.

Just a follow up to the charging situation. It is working just fine. It is charging .5 volt on the low setting which should be just fine.

The last major part to go on is the hitch. The original had been modified and widened so I cut out the section and welded a flat bar in. I had to put it on the mill and true up the edges to the original width and I also corner rounded the edges to blend in with the original radius. Blast, paint and clear coat and then install. Just the choke rod and it will be finished.

Working on making a custom choke rod. The original was in my opinion, an after thought. So I got some 1/4" zinc plated rod and started by Macgyvering a little press brake punch and die to bend a tight radius. Machined some guide slots in the die to keep things square. Formed it in the hydraulic press.

Just eyeballing it as I went along, I managed to get it right on the first try. Figured I deserved a day like that! Also found a stainless ball knob in my collection that made for a nice touch on the end. And with that, this project has come to its conclusion. One of the most fun projects I have ever done! Will conclude with a walk around video and we'll take it for a ride.

Nice choke. The original ones are definitely flimsy and bend easily. Once they bend, they are hard to maintain proper movement.
