How to start diagnosing crank-no-start on a kubota common rail diesel

Sorry, my memory failed me there. The severe cold start voltage is 3.2V and during a normal start the electronics has to work with voltage drops down to 4.5V. See attached diagram from the LV 124 specification that most car manufacturers adhere to. I would not know what Kubota requirements are...

How to start diagnosing crank-no-start on a kubota common rail diesel

When cranking in cold conditions the battery voltage drops way below this value. The vehicle electronics has to be designed to handle this. Volkswagen for example specifies a drop to 3V at cold crank. Other manufacturers have their own specifications but they are all similar.

I have a little thread pitch gauge that has Whitworth with tpi on one side and Metric in mm on the other side. Together with calipers I could so far identify any thread I encountered.

Well, it will still be useful somewhere. :) But on the Kubota tractor it will most likely be metric, often with not commonly used pitch.

Mathematically that only depends on the choice of coordinate system (tree at centre or car at centre). :)

Is there actually a vent on those gear boxes? If not, was maybe the oil level too high and pressure built up when the oil got hot? Just thinking loud here :) . Really like to know the reason for the failure. You scared me a bit with that story, the gear price from Kubota is just ridiculous...

My understanding is that Butchs seal failed catastrophically (i.e. not just a slow leak) while he was cutting. Could have been caused by a branch or something hitting it. Maybe I should be more careful too where I go with my mower  certainly was not designed for cutting thick undergrowth...

Seal failing at the top is not a huge problem, a lot of oil would stay in and you would notice after cutting. The bottom seal failing you would not notice.

Interesting story, would not have thought this could happen, slow leak yes but not sudden loss. Thank you for sharing it ! To be honest, the tractor and deck is so noisy, I would not have heard that either. Possibly after the damage was done ... Maybe time to reconsider ignoring the seal change...

In my manual it says oil change every 150 hours. Gear box oil seal change every 2 years though 😲 As far as I know the SAE90 oil (used in my gearbox) is cracked mechanically by the gears over time, hence the oil change. Has nothing to do with wear and dirt that has to be removed.

What did you do to or on your Kubota today?

With the right leverage you get any amount of force. I would try putting a tree trunk in front of it as a pivot and use a steel girder as a lever under the stump (you did a great job already digging everything out under it). Then push the lever down with the FEL. Or you simply use 10kg of...

Thou shalt not underestimate the power of leverage. Or as Archimedes said: "Give me the place to stand, and I shall move the earth."

You gonna attack that with the mower? :) Never seen any blueberry that size ... 😲
